去年の4月にふじみ野教室に入会した井坂選手。当時、身体は柔らかいけど低い姿勢の動作は止まることができないし、力を出しながら動くこともできなかった。4ヶ月で臨んだ昨年8月の南関東大会の普及部門ではなんとか入賞。来年はJOC部門にチャレンジしよう！と言っても器械種目は練習していない状態だった。正直に言ってこのままではビリになるかな...と思っていた心配は杞憂に終わった。週5〜7回の練習に加え、自主練習を行い、動画を撮影して毎日送り、ふじみ野メインコーチである村上コーチと動作チェック。井坂選手と村上コーチの二人三脚の1年が始まった。
僕は週に1、2回剣槍を教えた。物凄い速さで上達していった。シンプルに練習量が増えれば、面白いほどに上手になるんだと、当たり前だけどこれって凄いなぁと目を見張るものがあった。初心者には必ず練習量が必要である。また、間違った努力を知る、という意味でも練習量は必要である。コーチが指摘することもできるが、自分で試行錯誤して考えて、成功や失敗を何度も繰り返して、この努力は間違っていたんだと知る。失敗から学ぶには、失敗した時にそうと分かる必要がある。練習量が多い選手は調整力がつく。それを彼女は学んだと思う。
4月のTFA競技大会では動作規格はほぼクリアし、7月末のリハーサル大会では南関東大会優勝者である長友選手にも競り勝った。減点するところがなくなって、非常に期待が持てた。しかし、1年と4ヶ月。期間はもちろん関係ないのだけれど、この短すぎる期間と目の前の完成度の高さに良い意味で乖離があって、本当にJOCに行けるのかどうか？頭の片隅に不安が少しよぎっていた。しかし、彼女には必ず勝てると信じ込ませた。最終調整も村上コーチに任せた。
南関東大会当日、1種目めは非常に厳しい採点でどの選手も減点が多発した。井坂選手も御多分に洩れず、減点された。5箇所の減点。1種目めではあるが、JOCに行けるような点数ではなかった。村上コーチはひどく落ち込んでいたが、気丈に振る舞っていたと思う。大きなミスはなかったように思えたが遠巻きに見ていたので減点箇所が分からず、かつ減点コードも出ないため、他選手の得点を見つつ、考えうる限りの減点箇所をコーチ陣が洗い出し選手たちに伝えるようにした。井坂選手も次に切り替えて再調整していった。2種目めは普段通りの演武で追い上げを見せ、JOC出場権利の4位まで浮上した。これはもう行ける！という雰囲気で、最終種目へと向かった。
結果は、動作規格が満点。この上ない出来栄えだった。1年と4ヶ月に、確かに2、3年分の練習量が詰まっていた。客席に堂々と戻ろうとする井坂選手の姿が自慢げに思えた。しかし、最終成績は、5位。成績表を見ると、JOC出場権利がある4位の選手とはわずか0.1点差。最初の種目の減点が足を引っ張る形となった。入賞者のアナウンスが流れて順位を告げられると、村上コーチは項垂れた。「よくやった」と肩を叩くと、彼は無言で体育館の隅に歩いていった。
閉会式後、井坂選手のお父さんと15分くらい、これまでの彼女の頑張り、成績だけには表れないもの、ここからどう立ち上がるか？話していた。お父さんは、このチームに出会えて良かった、これからもよろしくお願いします、と言ってくれた。お父さんが「最後に村上コーチにお礼をしなきゃ」と言ったから、僕は「今あいつに会ったら号泣すると思いますよ」と言った。「じゃあ、尚更行きましょうか」と茶目っ気ある返答だった。村上コーチが待つ会場の玄関に行き、お父さんの顔を見ると村上コーチは泣き崩れた。「すみませんでした」と消え入るような声で言っていた。良い男泣きだった。
たくさんの子どもが通うチームの責任者として1人の選手のことを話すのは今更に申し訳ないが、井坂選手のこの1年間の取り組みはMVPに値すると言える。これからの後輩の道標になる。お父さんも村上コーチも心配していた「ひどく落ち込んで燃え尽きてしまったらどうしよう」というのはまたしても杞憂に終わった。次の日には、村上コーチの元に「新しい套路(組み合わせ)を覚える練習をしています！」と動画が送られてきた。強いなと思う。スポーツはこういう人の心を育てるもので、成績至上ではない。そして、あんなに悔しんで泣くようなコーチはあまり見かけない。本気で取り組んだ成果が、あの涙に表れていた。村上コーチもまた、コーチとして成長したということだろう。
