“Japanese Women Photographers: From 1950s to Now”

Date:June 24th to September 27th
Venue:

会場:THE PHOTOGRAPHER’S GALLERY (ロンドン)

From website
This landmark exhibition rewrites the story of Japanese photography through the eyes of women. Japanese Women Photographers spotlights the work of 27 groundbreaking artists, from the 1950s to today, whose perspectives have shaped how Japan sees itself, and how it is seen by the world.

Spanning identity, pop culture, fashion and everyday life, the exhibition celebrates internationally renowned Japanese women photographers, alongside those who have long been overlooked. The result is a powerful rebalancing of a history too often told through a single, male-dominated lens.

From pioneering figures of the post-war era to today’s most daring and experimental voices, the exhibition takes over The Photographers’ Gallery this summer with more than 200 photographs, videos, installations and rare photobooks. Together, Japanese Women Photographers is a vivid, intimate and expansive portrait of Japan, revealing how women artists have challenged conventions, captured social change and redefined photography across generations.

Curated by Lesley A. Martin, Takeuchi Mariko and Pauline Vermare. This exhibition is in connection with the publication I’m So Happy You Are Here: Japanese Women Photographers 1950s to Now (Aperture, 2024). The exhibition is organised by Aperture in collaboration with the Rencontres d’Arles with support from Kering | Women In Motion, Ishibashi Foundation, Anne Levy Charitable Trust,1970 Japan World's Exposition Memorial Fund, The Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, OKAN and Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation. Additional curatorial collaboration for the exhibition in London with Taous Dahmani, The Photographers’ Gallery. The Japanese Women Photographers' Reading Room is supported by Ellen Yiwei Wang.

“THE SPACE BETWEEN US
IN THE WILSON CENTRE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTION”

Date:June 19th to January 3rd 2027
Venue:

会場:LE BAL(パリ)

From website
From fleeting encounters to carefully staged collaborations, from images caught in the moment to collaboratively constructed scenes, the exhibition examines the relationship that comes into being, at the moment the photograph is made, between the photographer and their subject. What does the image reveal about the respective positions of these two bodies? About their complicity, their face-to-face encounter, the silent pact sealed by the gaze of one upon the appearance of the other?

The exhibition brings together iconic works and lesser-known images, from the 1920s to the present day, in a sensitive journey shaped by visual echoes, affinities and unexpected correspondences between images.

“Always, at the centre of each photograph, there is this small struggle of consciousness between the one who reveals and the one who unveils themselves, a struggle for which the photographic portrait has always been the privileged stage.” – Bertrand Schefer

AWARE(Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions)やSPECTRUMなどの文化事業を企画・実践しています。

Photographer Tomoko Sawada and curator Marina Amada both live in the Kansai region but met in Paris in 2025 during a research residency organized by Maison Kochimi, a partner of Villa Kujoyama.

Tomoko Sawada has consistently employed typology and self-portraiture to develop conceptually constructed bodies of work presented both in Japan and internationally, exploring how identity is shaped through gaze and social frameworks.

Marina Amada engages in curatorial practice that connects the field of art with social discourse through the lens of gender, working on cultural initiatives such as AWARE (Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions) and SPECTRUM. Building on the mutual dialogue cultivated during their shared residency in Paris in 2025, they will share their evolving practices and thoughts.

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW
In 1984, for its first major exhibition of photography, the AGO relied on loans from local collectors. In a jubilant reversal, on the occasion of the department’s 25th anniversary, the museum presents this exhibition drawn from the rich collection the AGO has since built, featuring artworks chosen by the community that has helped it flourish.

In a departure from traditional curatorial models, Collective Visions: Celebrating 25 Years of Photography is shaped by more than 80 artists, collectors, donors, curators, community leaders, and scholars, beginning with a selection by Curator Emeritus Maia-Mari Sutnik. Structured as an “exquisite corpse”—the collaborative game popularized by the Surrealists in the 1920s—each participant selects a photograph in response to the previous choice. Unfolding image by image, the exhibition reveals a web of relationships, sensibilities, and perspectives, offering a living portrait of photography’s evolving place in Toronto’s cultural landscape.

Organized by Sophie Hackett, the AGO’s Curator of Photography, Collective Visions: Celebrating 25 Years of Photography aims to highlight the breadth of the AGO’s photography collection, representing a diverse range of artists, artistic genres and approaches, subject matter, and materials. Accompanied by responses from the participants, the works on view offer a rich and varied perspective on the medium of photography.

“Persona: Photography and the Re-Imagined Self”

Venue:

Persona: Photography and the Re-Imagined Self

With work spanning from the early 20th century to the present, Persona: Photography and the Re-Imagined Self explores the often liberating re-imagining of self. Ranging from playful to political, confrontational to aspirational, these images time-travel and gender-bend, mask and mirror. Evolving from an artist’s personal and cultural history, the creation of a persona may ultimately be a strategy toward finding one’s voice and inspiring empathy.

Persona: Photography and the Re-Imagined Self and Jamie Diamond: Monstra Te Esse Matrem, 2026 are supported in part by Barbara and Amos Hostetter, the Barbara Lee Program Fund, Fredericka and Howard Stevenson, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
