A while ago, I had the most amazing experience photographing in the Alaskan wilderness staying at a remote lodge owned by a wonderful man who is a pilot, and his wife.
Every morning we started the adventure by boarding our daily form of transportation, the float plane. On this particular day, we flew for about an hour before we landed on a small pristine lake.
As I started to explore my surroundings, I spotted a fallen tree on the shoreline and made my way over to photograph it. While I was taking a picture, I heard some rustling noises around my feet. I looked down and there was a gosling waddling up to me. My first thought was this little guy was way too young to be out on his own and away from his mother, but I recalled earlier hearing some rather menacing screeches from hawks who were circling in on something farther down the lakeshore.
At this point, we surmised that this poor baby was now the only one left in his family. He continued to follow me around for hours and never left my side. With a little back and forth and no hesitation, we decided to take him with us since he had no chance of surviving on his own. The pilot had a farm on his property, so the gosling would get the care he needed and have a safe home until he was ready to live on his own. I wrapped him up in a blanket, got on the float plane with him securely in my lap and the little guy took his first flight without even being able to fly.
I just love a happy ever after ending!
