On Day 05, I started the day by heading down to Nagasaki to see the Peace Park and the small island of Dejima. Dejima was a small Dutch trading post established during prior to the Edo Period, and it was virtually the only point of contact with the west during the Edo Period. The island remarkably survived the atomic bombing, and today it houses museums and the preserved Dutch settlement. After, I traveled down to Amakusa Island and then down to Kagoshima City in the south.
From the first time I visited over ten years ago, I have absolutely adored this city. It’s criminally underrated, vibrant, bohemian, delicious — the rowdy and rebellious love child of Osaka and Okinawa with a giant overactive volcano just across the harbor to remind everyone to stay humble and remember who the real boss is. News of the bubble crash in the 90s never seemed to make it this far away from Tokyo — the tacky showa bars, obnoxious salarymen knocking back one too many, and chain smoking street hawks wearing adidas track suits like scrawny Russian mafia members — life is good, and it’s palpable. They all march to beat of a different drum here.
At this point, we’re almost at the 25% mark on the trip! After Day 06, we’re turning our sights to the north, and it’ll take two weeks to get there. Stay tuned!

This is Bishanohana Cape, the westernmost point of Honshu. I took a detour here after leaving Shimonoseki on Day 04. From here, I crossed the Kanmon Bridge to Kyushu, took a stroll in Fukuoka’s Tenjin neighborhood, and found some waterfalls in Saga just before sunset at the westernmost point of mainland Japan on the coast of Nagasaki.

Shimane and Yamaguchi Prefectures
The Great Japan Grand Inland Tour Series 04
For the second half of day three, I travelled through the interior portions of Hiroshima, Shimane, and Yamaguchi Prefectures — ending in the city of Shimonoseki. After visiting Ryuzugataki Falls, I made a mad dash to the coast to catch the sunset and dinner in the town of Masuda. On my way to Shimonoseki, I pulled over for an incredible view of the Milky Way.
Shimonoseki is the last city on Honshu before crossing to the the island of Kyushu. Throughout history, the city has played a remarkably outsized role in maritime trade and transportation. Now overshadowed by its larger neighbors, Shimonoseki is still a surprisingly cosmopolitan city, owing to its establishment as a treaty port in the Meiji Period. The narrow Kanmonkaikyo is Japan’s Bosporus – a strategic and defensible shortcut to East Asia intersecting the narrowest point of Japan’s main industrial axis and a natural gateway between Honshu and Kyushu. Until a tunnel was constructed, two grand railway terminals stood on both sides of the channel with ferries shuttling passengers back and forth between the two land masses and points beyond.

Nara, Kyoto, and Tottori Prefectures
The Great Japan Grand Inland Tour Series 02
On day two, I travelled from Nara to Tottori through the interior of Kyoto. The bright green foliage and contrasted against pink and yellow flowers and deep cerulean skies for a beautiful summer palette that tells you you’re deep in the heartland of Japan.
I mostly skipped the cities of Nara and Kyoto, as I’ve travelled to both many times — my main focus was to journey off the beaten path through small country villages that time forgot.

Hiroshima and Ehime Prefectures
Today I went island hopping on the Akinada Tobishima Kaido. The islands in the Seto Inland Sea are the mountaintops of large landmasses that have flooded since the last glacial maximum. This means that the surrounding waters are relatively shallow and easy to bridge with modern technology. This group of islands is connected to mainland Japan through a series of around a dozen spans leapfrogging over the narrow channels separating them. The roads on some of these islands are barely wide enough for a single car, and they cling to the sides of the coastlines like barnacles on the hull of a ship. Spring is still two days away, but can already feel its warmth if you know where to look.

Gifu and Nagano Prefectures
For some reason, I got a lot of new followers recently, leaving me wondering if the past five years of anemic growth on this page has finally ended. Here’s a long overdue post.
For Golden Week this year, I traveled down to Gifu and Nagano Prefectures and was met with some of the most beautiful weather possible. The shimmering blue waters and the freshly unfurled green leaves were exactly the step away from the craziness of Tokyo I needed. This area is stupendously underrated, and I hope it stays that way.

I saw a sunny day coming up on the forecast and decided to take a trip to Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture. Lake Chuzenji was created around 20,000 years ago when an eruption by neighboring Mount Nantai blocked the outflow channel, also creating the Kegon Waterfall in the process. The lake is 160 meters deep and was discovered in 782 when the mountain was climbed by a priest named Shodo. The area was considered sacred and closed to women until the year 1872. When Japan opened to the west during the Meiji Period, many foreign embassies built vacation homes around the lake. The region was designated an Imperial Park in 1911 and established as Nikko National Park in 1934. On the far end of Nikko National Park is Mount Nikko-Shirane. There are no taller mountains north or east of this point in Japan.
