A place that was once a river. Now, instead of water, cars flow through it.

Ginza’s “Uneme Bridge” 1984⇔2023

This beautiful stone bridge with its twin arches was built in 1930 (Showa 5) as part of the reconstruction efforts following the Great Kanto Earthquake.
Originally spanning the Tsukiji River, the river was filled in ahead of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and the bridge was transformed into part of the Metropolitan Expressway (Central Loop Line).

With the passage of time, what flows here has shifted from “water” to “cars.”
From the Showa era to the Reiwa era, this is a place that has quietly watched over the scenery of Ginza.

Travel back in time to Ginza in 1984.

Ginza “Lupin” 1984⇔2020

“Lupin” is a historic bar that has been making its mark in the back alleys of Ginza for nearly 100 years. In this feature, we present rare black-and-white photographs from 1984, vividly restored in color.
Lupin was founded in 1928 (the early Showa era). It is a legendary venue where literary giants such as Osamu Dazai, Ango Sakaguchi, and Sakunosuke Oda once gathered to discuss literature and art night after night.
When it first opened, it operated as a “café,” but around 1935–36, it transformed into its current classic counter-bar style.
The photo captures the nostalgic yet vibrant atmosphere of the 1980s, following a major renovation in 1972. The sign and the ambiance of the alleyway still breathe with the spirit of that era.

This renowned establishment continues to watch over the streets of Ginza to this day. As you reflect on its past, enjoy a superb drink tonight.

The katakana signs were the heartbeat of the city.

Yurakucho: Under the Shinkansen Viaduct 1984⇔2026

Once upon a time, the area under the Shinkansen viaduct in Yurakucho was lined with distinctive signs like “Montmartre” and “Cabin,” shaping the eclectic and vibrant streetscape of the Showa era. However, with the progress of redevelopment and seismic retrofitting, urban planning that prioritizes safety and functionality has transformed the area into a unified, sophisticated landscape. At the same time, in recent years, there has been a growing movement to preserve the memories and “atmosphere” of the city by utilizing historical assets, such as the restoration of the Marunouchi Station building and the Hibiya OKUROJI project. The changes under the Yurakucho viaduct are not merely about beautification; they seem to pose a cultural question to us: “What should we preserve, and what should we pass on to the future?”

The gateway to the prestigious Ginza district.

Ginza Station on the Ginza Line: 1981–2020

Ginza Station was established in 1934 (Showa 9) with funding from Matsuya and Mitsukoshi, coinciding with the opening of the Tokyo Underground Railway (now the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line).
In 1981, the station platforms—still bearing traces of the era of high economic growth—were alive with the daily lives of the people of that time.
And now, in 2020. The station has been reborn as an elegant and serene space befitting Ginza. On the platform walls, a grand panorama depicts how the city has transformed from 1920 to the present (2020).

The unchanging symbol of “Ginza” and the ever-evolving “memory of the city.”

[Yurakucho Time Travel] The Story of How the “Nihon Theatre” Became Today's Marion.

Yurakucho Nihon Theatre: 1981 ⇔ 2020

The “Nihon Gekijō” (commonly known as “Nikkatsu”) was once a symbol of Yurakucho.
It is a legendary theater that weathered turbulent times—including air raids and post-war requisition—and led Japan’s entertainment industry for nearly half a century. That Nikkatsu was demolished in 1981, and what was reborn alongside the adjacent Asahi Shimbun Tokyo Headquarters was… yes, the “Yurakucho Marion” (Yurakucho Center Building) that we all frequent today!
Today, it’s a familiar shopping complex housing Men’s Hankyu, Lumine, Piccadilly, and more, but this place was once packed with the history of Japanese entertainment.

Learning about the history of the neighborhood makes even your usual shopping trip feel a little special, doesn’t it?

Sukiyabashi is a bridge built over the outer moat of Edo Castle in 1629, and is the name of the place around it. During the Edo period, it was on the border between the samurai and the townspeople's residence, and there was a castle gate called 1958, the outer moat was buried and demolished as the Tokyo Expressway was constructed.
