Obsidian is a volcanic glass that can be very sharp, with a cutting edge that can be sharpener than steel. Obsidian’s sharp edges and smooth curved surfaces make it ideal for creating stone artifacts, such as arrowheads, axes and knives.
Philosophically, Tecpatl (knife) represents light as well as reflection and methodical analysis. Like a knife, we can cut layers of everything that we want to know from the outside in until we reach the root or origin of the thing. It represents a method of profound study and analysis to truly comprehend the things and the concepts everlasting, acute, and sharp, like to blade of obsidian.
Tecpatls are highly valued by Native Mexican cultures from the Olmecs to the Aztecs. So important that it is one of the 20-day symbols and one of the four-year bearers of the Aztec Calendar. It is also seen in the center of the Aztec Calendar in form of a tongue on the face of the sun. in this form, it represents our palabra (word) and this symbolism tells us to be “sharp and to the point” with our words and at the same time cautious as our words can also be harmful.
Currently, we have a few different styles of quality hand crafted Tecpatls (knives) in stock for you to choose from to add to your collection.

The message we get from the clip is that we as Indigenous people on our own land have our own way of life. Our roots are well established on this land. Our ancestors were great observers and students of the cosmos and nature. With this knowledge and wisdom, we were able to build the largest city in the world, Mexico Tenochtitlan (Mexico City) at the time of the arrival of the european immigrants.
We flourished in abundance with all that Mother Nature provides for us, we had NO need to be DEPENDENT on anyone. After 500 years of colonization and invasion, many of us have lost our connection to our ancient culture to the point in which we believe the “lie” that we are “immigrants in our own land.”
It’s time we remember where we come from, who we are and the deep roots we have on this land. It’s time to identify ourselves once again as Indigenous people and re-connect to our ancient Culture, which includes our language, history, philosophy, knowledge, wisdom, traditions, values, food and medicine. We are the majority on this continent and in Unity there is Strength. Our Culture is our medicine and solution to all challenges facing our people.
We are surrounded by abundance; our mother earth will always provide for us. They tried to bury us, but they didn’t know we were seeds!!! So, let’s start putting water on those seeds for a better future for the next Seven Generations.
Tell us in the comments what message resonates with you from this clip!!!

He reflects on the words he heard growing up—Chicano, wetback, Hispanic, Latino.
Labels placed on our people—sometimes with pride, sometimes with confusion.
Are we Native? Are we illegals?
For many of us, those questions hung in the air, unanswered.
But through danza, something deeper emerged.
Not just a name—but a root.
A connection to something ancient. To a lineage.
To Mexihcayotl—a way of life that predates borders and survives colonization.
Danza has given us an identity as Indigenous people.
It brought us back to who we are—not what others called us.
It gave us rhythm, purpose, and pride shaped by movement and memory.
We’ve become part of a community that makes this an active, practical, and living ancestral tradition.
Not frozen in the past—but walked, danced, and honored in the present.
And today, many are waking up—finding themselves through danza, song, and tradition.
Not adopting culture, but returning to it.
