Let’s address the elephant in the room… 🐘

Coming from someone who was on-air TV designer, I know how hard it is to put reality renovation show together. Been there, done that, got the feature in TV week šŸ˜†

That said, I have to take issue with something almost all the reno shows do.

They’re not honest about the real cost to renovate, design and style a home.

The spend they show on-screen to redesign a space is hilariously low, doesn’t include any labour costs, nor are they clear enough about disclosing the sponsorships/freebies.

And then you have the other shows, where homeowners are told that their tiny budget can reno an entire home when in the real world they might get one bathroom completed.

The lack of transparency is such a disservice to the viewer. And then they come to a designer with a completely unrealistic budget (and it’s on me to burst their bubble). Or they try to do it themselves and get a very rude awakening.

Why do you think this is? Why is cost transparency such forbidden territory? šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø
The three word secret you need to know...

People often want their rooms to feel calm and quiet. Clients asked me to achieve this for them all the time.

The common trap everyone falls into though, is choosing the wrong colour palette (namely all white) and then realising the rooms don’t feel calm and quiet at all.

The three word secret is this: monochromatic colour palette.

And no, that doesn’t mean black-and-white. It means using the one colour in varying shades across a room.

It’s honestly the best way to create calm, serenity and tranquility in a space.

Notice in this room, I’ve used multiple shades of grey to create a sense of calm. I could use beige, brown, blue, green. The colour itself doesn’t really matter. It’s all about using lots of different shades of that one colour in things like carpet curtains, paint, wallpaper, and decorative elements.

Trust me, this works, so much better than keeping a room all white ever will.

This is the hill i’ll die on…

And, look, I don’t always get my way on this one. Sometimes my interior designer clients push back.

But this is my personal non negotiable: a bedroom has to have carpet!

There, I said it!!!

Hard flooring in a bedroom: cold and clinical 🄶
Carpet in a bedroom: warm and welcoming 🄰

I have made some hard-flooring bedrooms look and feel amazing with floor rugs, of course, but my preference is always carpet all day every day, 24/7, 365.

Fight me on this one but you won’t change my mind šŸ˜Ž
You won’t understand this unless you have designer OCD like me.

The first image: a beautiful, sleek, minimalist console table sitting pretty in my clients entry. Looking gorgeous. No notes šŸ–¤

Second picture: taken front on. And here’s where the OCD comes in. Everything looks beautifully centered, except for the pendant light in the room behind me šŸ¤¦šŸ»

Like Beyonce in ā€˜Irreplaceable’ it’s to the left, to the left.

This is going to haunt me forever. I’ll never know true peace.

If you get it, you get it.

There’s an illness sweeping the country, and you’re probably suffering from it 🄓

It’s what we call WWS: White Wall Syndrome.

WWS is best described as a strong, underlying desire to change your white walls, but feeling too scared and anxious to take the plunge.

The cure is exposure therapy, so let me expose you to the white wall I transformed for my design clients here in Melbourne.

We ditched the blankness in this living room in favour of a custom-designed wall with moody blue paint, acoustic panelling, floating shelves and some stunner pendant lights.

I hope this inspires you to get moving on curing your own WWS. And if you need a pro to go on the journey with you, i’m here and ready to get your remedy sorted.

I promise, it won’t hurt a bit šŸ˜‰

Design rule #765 you better not be breaking šŸ«£ā¬‡ļø

It’s my firm belief that your main bedroom and ensuite need to have a relationship. Not the MAFS kind either, more a sharing of similar vibes.

Swipe across and you’ll see what I mean.

Colour is the easiest way to do it. A bedroom wall colour replicated in a bathroom tile is a nice way to connect the two zones.

It can be something far simpler and less permanent, too!

A quilt cover set or an artwork in your bedroom, and then that same colour represented in the towels in your bathroom.

Are you doing this at your place? Do you feel like the two zones speak to one another, feel connected, and that cohesion has been achieved?

If not, you know what you need to do šŸ˜‰

ā€œI wouldn’t have done that in my living roomā€.

We all say it, right? But if you only knew the journey a room goes on when you’re designing with a client.

And that is the goal, right? A happy client. A good looking room. A space that functions well for those who live in it. And, a client who feels their life has improved because of your work.

Most importantly: we don’t design for the masses. By that I mean, we deliver every client THEIR dream space. We don’t repeat the same style over and over. No cookie cutters here baby! 🚫

Scroll across from the tale of this living room. What started out as a bit of a cold canvas got a soothing, feminine feel applied to it. With some easy sophistication, of course. We always deliver that.

You’ll never see me do this… 🫣

And I really hope you haven’t done it either (don’t shoot the messenger though - I am merely doing the work of the design gods here).

But please, never put a linear pendant light over a long rectangular dining table.

It’s a no-no.

You don’t want to mirror the long shape of the table with another long shape, in a room that is most likely already rectangular. It’s too many hard lines and we need to break it up.

The best way to do it: An organic shape over a rectangle table. Something round is fine, sure, but if it has an interesting profile it works even more.

It could be like the one in this dining room from my Camberwell project. It could be something with multiple arms on it. It could be a few single pendants staggered at different heights.

Just make sure it’s not linear. I beg of you! šŸ™šŸ¼

I promise you this worksā€¦ā¬‡ļø

The sure-fire way to make your home appear more expensive and elevated is…

✨ Choosing cabinet doors fronts that aren’t flat ✨

Trust me, a cabinet door with some interest on the front changes everything!

I’m talking a traditional shaker profile, a thinner rail and stile around the edge, VJ panel fronts, glass cut outs, moulding, or anything else you can think of.

This small detail brings interest to flat panels and will make the rooms of your home (especially your kitchen, laundry and bathrooms) appear more custom, more high-end, more refined.

Beautiful handles are a bonus too, but the door profiles are everything!

Did you get this right at your place?

If you need more real-world design tips to make your home a stunner on any budget, you found me! šŸ‘‹šŸ¼

The one word you need to keep in mind…

When designing and decorating the rooms of your home, the one word you need to keep in mind is… drumroll please…

✨ Cohesion ✨

In design, cohesion means that there’s a through line from room to room. It can be:

āļø A colour that appears in one room, and then another
āļø A pattern that’s repeated in multiple spaces
āļø Textures showcased across zones
āļø Furniture profiles - think curves, leg details, shape etc

Your rooms essentially need to speak to each other. As you move from one to the other they need to feel like family members; not identical but there’s a noticeable relationship.

Do you have cohesion in your home? šŸ

If you need help to achieve it, I’ve got your back!
