Wildlife Patient Update – May 20, 2026

Baby bird season is ramping up, and we’re starting to see more nestlings and fledglings arrive at the wildlife hospital. Before trimming trees or shrubs, please check carefully for active nests.

If you find baby birds on their own, do your best to locate the nest or nearby parents before intervening. A young bird’s best chance at survival is with their wild parents. Wildlife rehabilitation is the backup plan when reuniting is not possible or the baby has been injured. Our hospital team can help you with the reunion process over the hotline -.

Once it was signed, things went into motion, with ODFW working on budget planning for the next two years. Now, they’ll have a lot more to work with, and they’re already:

🔬Creating over 40 new jobs for wildlife and habitat biologists
🐸Launching projects to implement our state wildlife action plan and restore imperiled species, including ones who’ve never had funding before
🏥Providing grants for rehabilitation centers and coexistence work

Along with even more programs launching across the state🙌

HB 4134 is a landmark, bipartisan investment in Oregon’s natural legacy, and this is just the beginning.

Follow along for more updates, and you can check out ODFW’s YouTube channel for full recordings of recent budget updates / what programs will be included in this first phase.

Lastly, huge thank you to the amazing folks at for hosting our crew last week, y’all are the best🥳🐾❤️

We are incredibly excited to share that we officially exceeded our $20,000 matching campaign from Dakoda’s Fund, raising a total of $22,450 to support Think Wild’s new Semi-Aquatic Mammal Rehabilitation Enclosure.

Construction is now in the final stages thanks to the efforts of many volunteers, staff and local businesses. Over the last year, we have completed major infrastructure work including a 400-amp electrical upgrade, new water infrastructure, grading and drainage improvements, concrete foundations, custom rehabilitation pools, plumbing systems, and primary fence post installation. Roofing, fencing, no-climb barriers, and shift doors are currently underway, with filtration system installation and habitat outfitting coming next.

Thanks to this campaign and the incredible generosity of our community, we are one step closer to completing a facility that will expand wildlife rehabilitation capacity throughout Oregon and support future conservation initiatives for native semi-aquatic species, including beavers and river otters.

We are deeply grateful to Dakoda’s Fund and every single person and business who donated, shared, and supported this campaign. Your generosity is directly helping create a critical new resource for wildlife across Oregon. Thank you!

Owl Pellets Needed! 🦉

One of the most fun and engaging ways we teach students about food webs, species interactions, and wildlife stewardship is through owl pellet investigations. Students get to carefully dissect the regurgitated casts from owls to find fur, feathers, skulls, vertebrae, and more from the rodents and other prey that owls eat.

We need to purchase more owl pellets to support this spring's education programs - WHOOO will help us?

You can order owl pellets for us directly from our wishlist on Amazon (link in bio), or send us a Venmo for $192.99 so we can make the purchase ourselves.
Friendly reminder if you’re seeing foxes this spring 🦊

It’s denning season, and mother foxes are working hard to safely raise their kits. Sometimes they choose den sites near people, including under porches, sheds, garages, barns, or hillsides, where they may feel safer from predators like coyotes.

If you notice a fox family nearby, please remember this is usually temporary. Fox kits stay in the den for their first few weeks of life, and fox families often move between den sites throughout the season. By late summer or early fall, they are typically gone.

Seeing a fox during the daytime does not automatically mean the animal is sick or rabid. Parent foxes spend long hours searching for food to care for their young. Foxes are generally shy, solitary animals that prefer to avoid people.

The best thing you can do is give them space, keep pets supervised, secure backyard flocks and their enclosures, and enjoy the opportunity to observe wildlife from a respectful distance. Watching fox kits play and grow can be a pretty special experience.

Please avoid attempting to trap or relocate foxes yourself. Relocation is often stressful and can separate families or reduce an animal’s chance of survival. If you are having conflicts with foxes, you can reach out to our Humane Wildlife Services team - wildlife
