Growing up in Canada, I was constantly watching white people in important roles around me. Teachers, principals, police officers and in the news. Then when I went home and turned on the TV, I saw even fewer people of colour, especially when it came to South Asian folks and I don't think I ever saw Tamil folks unless my parents were watching their serials.
When I finally started seeing people who looked like me pop up in important roles, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride. Seeing,, and makes my heart so full! For so long there were so few of us represented in any occupation and now, not only are we grinding hard to make our dreams come true but are at the top of the top! We have a Tamil woman in the White House! We have a Tamil woman featured in Beyonce's music video! We have a Tamil woman from Toronto starring in her own Netflix's series created by a Tamil woman! This is something that baby Sureka could have never imagined! These incredible Tamil woman worked their butts off, broke down barriers and got to these places and are now showing young brown women around the world that they can do the same. Representation really matters folks!!
So why do I "stir things up"? Because I want anyone who comes across my profile and sees a little bit of themself in me to know they can do anything they set their mind to! With this post I want to remind every brown girl that we are the world! We are slaying the game and I can't wait to see what our community will do.
