Nagasaki’s cutest hidden gems πŸ“πŸ‰πŸˆπŸŠπŸ…

πŸ“Konagai, Isahaya City/ Nagasaki

Along the coast of Konagai in Isahaya, you’ll find 16 giant fruit-shaped bus stops along Route 207. They were originally built for the Journey Exposition Nagasaki 1990 and became so popular that they stayed permanently.

There are five different fruit designs to hunt down + one orange colored mikan:
πŸ“ Strawberry
πŸ‰ Watermelon
🍈 Melon
🍊 Mikan
πŸ… Tomato

The bus stops stretch along the coastline for about 9 minutes by car (or around 1.5 hours on foot from end to end), making them surprisingly easy to explore. I visited 3 fruits during one half-day trip and returned for the remaining 2 on another afternoon, but you could absolutely see all five fruit types in a single day if you are dedicated! Check the map in advance. The walking distance between some of the fruits is quite short.

🚌 If you have no car, it’s still doable by public transport. Take the JR Nagasaki Main Line to Konagai or Nagasato Station and use the local bus running along Route 207. Just be prepared to plan ahead, as buses are quite infrequent and often run only about once per hour ⏰

I really loved how some bus stops sit beside flower fields and some look straight out over the ocean πŸ₯Ή Which one is your favorite?

Black cats are believed to bring good fortune at Komagome Myogi Shrine πŸˆβ€β¬›βœ¨

I came across this place in Tokyo and instantly noticed: cats everywhere (?!) πŸ‘€

ABOUT βš”οΈ
Instead of other guardian animals, this shrine has koma-neko (guardian cat statues) watching over the entrance. The story behind it is that a samurai was once guided to safety by a black cat after a battle, which is why cats here are connected to protection and good fortune.

You’ll spot them all over the grounds!! Not just the statues, but also smaller cat figures next to the cat sculptures, in between flower displays or hidden in little corners…

I promise they also have a shrine cat πŸ₯ΊπŸ± I just didn’t manage to take a video of the rightful guardian of the shrine 😒 it’s super cute and fluffy. Check out Google Maps for more photos of the shrine cat 🐈

HOW TO GET THERE πŸš‚
JR Yamanote Line to Komagome Station + 5 min walk
or Tokyo Metro Namboku Line + 5 min walk

WHEN πŸ•£
Omamori / Goshuin: 9:00-16:00
Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays!

WHY
The goshuin and omamori are also suuuper worth visiting πŸ₯Ί
They have seasonal cat goshuin (including clear ones), so the designs keep changing throughout the year.

DURING SAKURA SEASON πŸŒΈπŸˆβ€β¬›
I got the sakura x cat goshuin
But my number one is still the cat omamori!! The design and colors almost look like stained glass 😭 I have never bought such a pretty omamori- ever!
