In this video we have Donnie. Donnie has had some unpleasant experiences around different people who put too much pressure on him which caused him to lash out to make himself feel safer. And each time he has tried that, IT WORKS!

In Donnie’s future his owners would like to leave him with someone. We are practicing scenarios with him and getting more comfortable with us. His first sessions we didn’t touch, get close or speak to him. We allowed him to see us with zero pressure.

Today we out more pressure on him by taking his leash. No pets. No trying to hand his food he doesn’t want. Just a couple repetitions of calmly walking him away from his owner.

We put him in a position he felt he had seen before. β€œThis person is going to touch me”. But I didn’t. And when he tries to go at my legs. He was met with nothing. If a HUMAN is being way too much and making a dog SO uncomfortable they feel the need to lash out. That’s NOT the dog’s fault. There was no behaviour here that needed to be corrected right now.

The attempts didn’t work. Donnie learned that. But also learned I’m not trying to pet him. Flooding a dog isn’t good learning but small increments of stress where the dog can actually learn IS beneficial.

Great job Donnie!

When the management doesn’t work- it often needs to be practiced MORE. & yes, sometimes training can be tedious. Like learning to drive. But you need to practice to make perfect!

In many cases with management we hear the same story. β€œI have done this before” but when it’s go time, the dog and handler both struggle to smoothly complete the management. The dog fights it. They look back and react. That’s because it’s NOT a rewarding exercise (yet). You need to practice with nothing around and create REWARD history first! No matter what the management is!

The OTHER thing, you don’t WAIT until the dog is mid reaction to manage. Imagine YOU begin to feel scared and the person you’re with asks if you’d like to leave? VS you’re so scared you begin to cry and scream and freak out. THEN someone tries to shove some pizza in your face going β€œOH WHATS WRONG??”

Which would make YOU feel safer? The person always aware of your comfort from the beginning OR the person who didn’t notice until it was too late and then wasn’t very helpful?

This video is featuring one of our day training clients. We offer 1:1 in person & virtual sessions as well as our NEW board and train style DAY TRAINING that is featured in this video.

It’s getting close to summer! With the nice weather (in Canada) that always means e collar season picks up!

Wanting your best friend to share an off leash summer adventure with you! Some clients do recall training with no e collars and some prefer to use them.

If e collars are something you have wondered about, here’s how WE as trainers use them with our clients.

Recall back up in case of emergency. We want all clients dogs to have solid foundations and engagement with their owners. We pair e collar stimulation to already solid commands (just like leash pressure). The dogs will learn that the feeling of e collar means COME BACK. This is not a magic button. But it’s a wonderful tool when used properly and safely in the right hands.

As you can see with this dog. He not flattening himself, no pinned ears, no stress panting, he taking his food happily and bouncing back to his family. That is what you should be looking for. A happy dog.

Dog owners. Enrichment is a GREAT thing to add to your dog’s routine for some extra biological fulfillment. They are a much better way to feed your dog (vs a bowl).

But somewhere along the line this extra way of enhancing your dog’s life turned into. β€œI don’t need to go for walks? I can do an hour of licky mat?”

Uhm no? Not sure where THAT came from. After the park, a hike, a swim, some play with the owner….it can be nice to add some food enrichment for dinner.

Take your dog outside. Play with them. Let them RUN. Dig. Sniff. Get filthy.

THAT IS THE REAL ENRICHMENT THEY NEED

Dogs don’t give KISSES, they way we humans do (or think they do).

Dogs can show appeasement behaviours and they can lick as a soothing behaviour. Or the most underrated one… you have food on your face they want!

Lucifer here is β€œkissing” me because he wants MORE pets. He’s offering a behaviour to let me know β€œKEEP GOING”. Ripley was featured in a video where she was asking me to STOP.

How can you tell the difference? To the trained eye it’s obvious. Ripley looks freaked out and panicked, Lucifer calm and relaxed. But the BIGGEST take away is that LUCIFER was initiating more. Ripley was NOT. Everytime I stop Lucifer leans in asking for MORE affection. Ripley was pulling AWAY from me and when I stopped she DID NOT want more.

When in doubt, stop and do consent check. See what the dog does next.

Act like Lucifer?

Or act like Ripley?

Another day another use for a solid down command.

Ripley has ALWAYS had a thing for textures. They give her zoomies and she loves it. We also love to watch it. BUT sometimes the zoomies are dangerous πŸ˜‚ Like being on a teather and hurting yourself.

Reactive rescue dog goes over their threshold and stopped eating mid walk 😱 what do we do????

Nothing. We stopped walking. This specific scenario this dog had a trigger pop up which made him stop eating. Today the sidewalks were quiet and there was no looming threat. So we just hung out until he felt safe again.

⭐️THINGS TO REMEMBER
If this trigger was on the same side of the sidewalk coming AT US, we would move. But that was not the case. The trigger was across the road moving AWAY.

If your dog starts pulling or stops eating on the sidewalk, most people will just keep walking. That will ONLY make the issue worse. Every step you take the dog gets more frantic and goes farther over threshold to the point of trigger stacking they can’t come back down from.

Management is a pet of training. Not everything goes smoothly. When we take our clients on sidewalks it’s to show them HOW to work through this. It is NOT something we ever do first session either.

Sidewalks are where all the problems are. Sidewalks are where you can no distance and very little room for error. Side walks are the BOSS BATTLE of reactivity.
