I met the most FABULOUS man last week.

And somehow, within the space of five minutes, I’d agreed to drinks on his terrace that very evening.

Cue velvet tux, very good claret and stories that you definitely wouldn’t want your boss, children, mother to hear.

Meet Rodney. My extraordinarily brilliant new neighbour. And future co-conspirator.

Read my latest article about making new friends in later life. About secret doors and secret islands. And the shrine to hedonism hidden in plain sight.

Thinking on, meeting Rodney, I am indescribably sad, I realise, that we have gone so far backwards in our tolerance, acceptance and celebration of others.

Why have we become so puritanical about pleasure? What is so very wrong with pursuing the pleasure that comes from a simple life, freedom from fear and deep intellectual and emotional connection?

This is a tribute to all the Rodneys. All those who dare greatly. I’ll be seeing you on the towpath.

“To dare is to lose one’s footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself.”

And there are times, rare times, when you know history is being made as you are living it. That the present moment will stay with you as sharply decades from now as it is in this very instant. That you can return in your mind at any moment of your choosing.

The deep seated peace of the forest, the multitude of unseen things, and the folly that somehow survived and stood quietly for four hundred years, waiting to be rediscovered.
Deep Rest. Reading. Writing. Walks. Sunrises. Rising Heat.

In the magnificent solitude of a Palladian folly in the woods. does it again.

It’s #chelseaflowershow this week & London is in full bloom.

But a little bit upriver my own little garden is taking shape. At only 5 months old and half the size of main avenue show garden at Chelsea, I still expect it to pack a punch.

This is my idea of paradise. Exotic, productive, intimate, restful & re-invigorating. There’s somewhere to sit, somewhere to socialise, somewhere to eat and importantly somewhere to work in nature. I love nothing more than padding over to my little red writing shed with a coffee in the morning. The gentle lighting at night means it’s just as alluring to sneak out after dark, too.

I designed and planted this garden myself. Using the experience and some of the plants I gained from making my old garden in the countryside, but also using the skills I learned from the best designers and contractors I’ve had the privilege to learn from working on previous show gardens at Chelsea.

It’s going to be a gorgeous summer. I can see the lemons and oranges fruiting and the pomegranate is about to burst into flower. Let the good times roll.

No stress. Just vibes. Good energy. ✌️#nature #gardendesign #london #citygarden
Reno Diaries: The Day Room

As a single mum I have a split identity. There’s the me that is a busy mother to two small kids and pack leader to Athena and Mischief. And there’s the me that exists away from those responsibilities. That’s the me that likes to socialise, have fun, read, write, chill. I didn’t want to minimise that part just because of the immediacy of all the other stuff.

My new house with the kids needed to reflect that. So we have one room which is the day room. It’s for busy life that involves mess and drama and food and homework and smashing through to do lists. I wanted it to be immersive and uplifting and a total joy to walk through every day. I wanted it to be dog friendly and people friendly. For the life we lead 80% of the time. And full of little treasures that have meaning to just us.

Just because I have kids and dogs I didn’t want to default to “meh” finishings. I believe beauty and good design has a place everywhere and has a huge impact on how we feel. So even though this is a heavily used room, it’s still full of beautiful things.

The canvas-like wallpaper is a forest in summer by the painter Gaël Davrinche for. I absolutely adore it, as you can imagine as a gardener and country girl. You can’t help but smile being bathed in its golden light. And I see new things all the time, birds in the trees, fish swimming in a stream…

The ceiling, windows and woodwork are painted in Petal by. It just glows.

The staircase is Sadhika from. A gentle yellow.

The original pine floor was fixed up, sanded back and treated with oil in Raw HD.

The table came from
The chairs from auction via
Favourite 🐘 mug from
Green silk curtains I had from a house two houses (and a lifetime) ago - but they were also secondhand from but I believe once hung in the Dorchester hotel.
The throw is a real favourite and is from
The sofa’s linen cover is removable.
The cushions from the Picasso museum in Paris from a girls’ trip post break-up. Glorious.

For anything else, ask!
Why the Majority is Never Right:

When I got divorced so many people, including my lawyers, told me not to worry, I’d be remarried soon…

Five years on, I am SO glad that prophecy failed to materialise and the received wisdom behind it exposed for the fraud that it is.

I thank my lucky stars I was the goose that flew away from the V formation.

Genuinely.

If that doesn’t immediately make sense to you, you need to read the latest article on Substack.

In it, I look at why men are twice as likely to remarry than women ~ and why that might just be the best possible thing to happen to women.

Everywhere there is evidence that women in particular are quiet quitting dating altogether. App usage is down. Remarriage rates are down. Even birth rates are falling & couples are choosing not to marry. So what’s behind it?

If you’re into mastering the recycling schedule, niche hobbies AND fast cars, this one’s for you.

It takes a village.

My god, I’m lucky.

I’ve had to build the plane of a new life whilst already flying it. All the while watching helplessly and I’ll admit, terrified, as the old one ran out of gas and plummeted. The details of my crash and burn are kind of unimportant. But if you’ve gone through the end of a relationship, a bereavement, a life changing health diagnosis, where life changes instantly and forever, will know exactly how this feels.

But now, with the turbulence behind me and the wide eyed, white knuckled state of being that is to live interminably between the end of one thing but without sight of what is to come - I can see I was never alone.

I had a village. Friends old and new (you know who you are!) stepped up and in, the family who pulled together, the goodwill of strangers who didn’t expect repayment, and you guys, my little family on here. I’ve appreciated every word of encouragement and top tip you’ve left me to find in my DMs at a quieter moment.

A new life, a new home, and a new garden are finally taking shape. It may be small, but my god is it beautiful. It may belong to me. But this golden pot of possibility was made with many smiles, many hearts, many kind words and outsized gestures that mean it will never be mine alone. This was made possible by all of you. The people who cared enough to fly that plane too, with the knowledge that above every cloud is a blue sky waiting to be discovered.

THANK YOU.

If you’re still freaking out watching it all fall apart, know that you’ll get there. And you are never, NEVER alone. We’ve got you.

🙏🏽
Through our smartphones we have the world at our fingertips. And yet…

Whether we have it all or lose it all we come to the same conclusion.

We are not machines. We are not supercomputers. We are not algorithms. We are more than. We are souls. Our self awareness demands art and abstraction. We crave context, nuance, implication. We chase the ephemeral. We soar on the wings of the lark ascending. We live to love. To feel. To be moved. To move others.

That is why I have great hope for our future. Because the world is populated by souls. By people who live to love. To feel. To move. And be moved. There has never been a time where a greater premium was placed on simply what it is to be human. ❤️
