I truly cannot believe how far our backyard has come since we first bought our home. When we moved in, there was only a tiny, rusty fire pit in the back and the old garage was falling apart from water and termite damage. It desperately needed some help, but Brody and I both saw the vision for the space we could turn it into.
If youāre in a similar position, donāt underestimate the power of some sweat equity! You can do more than you think and if youāre willing to put in some work, you can transform your outdoor space on your own too.

As home owners who both work full time, it can feel like the weekends go by in the blink of an eye. Weāre feeling really accomplished with everything we got done outside so far! I didnāt get to planting everything, but thankfully we do have the weekday evenings with more daylight now:)

Most quality kits can range from $6k-10k+ š«Ø So price wise alone it was the right choice for us, but there were several other aspects that we think set our build apart from a kit:
ā¢ We built this inside our remodeled gym. This allowed us to control the insulation and helps the sauna heat up faster
ā¢ Since we had a custom framed room, we were able to make it ~7 ft tall (most kits can feel cramped)
ā¢ The height allowed for two bench levels that give actual heat variation (we followed Trumpkinās notes)
ā¢ We got to choose our own heater (we went with a Harvia 8kW heater with WiFi control) The WiFi controls cost more but in our opinion are SO worth it to be able to turn the sauna on remotely. Many kits also come with infrared heaters which donāt get as hot

Welcome back to part 3 of the Schweigert Sauna build!
The full reveal of the exterior is finally here and I went into a little more detail about our design. We followed Trumpkinās notes when we designed our space, which if youāre not familiar is a famous guide about the art and science of a Finnish style sauna.
