This is Lamprais and if you’re travelling Sri Lanka, trust us… you need to try it.

A traditional Sri Lankan dish made up of rice, curry, sambol and loads of flavour, all wrapped inside a banana leaf and slowly baked. The smell when you open it is unreal 🤤

We found them in cafƩs and local restaurants around Ella, but you can find Lamprais all over Sri Lanka. One of those meals that feels like an experience, not just food.

Definitely one of the best things we ate on the trip. Save this post because you don’t want to miss out on trying this whilst you’re there!
We never expected a conversation with a stranger on a beach in Sri Lanka to end like this…

Last year, we met a local guy whilst walking along the beach near our hotel. We stood chatting for ages about life, kids, travel and Sri Lanka… and somehow ended up agreeing to let him take us around in his tuk-tuk the next day.

Something we NEVER would’ve done before travelling.

The next morning, he turned up outside our hotel and spent the day showing us the real Sri Lanka. Hidden beaches, tea plantations, roadside fruit stalls, tiny local cafes and places we never would’ve found on our own.

But the best part wasn’t the places… it was the friendship that came from it.

Over the next few months we met his family, spent more time together when we returned to Sri Lanka and realised that some of the best parts of travelling are the people you meet along the way.

And now next year, Danushka will be leading our Roaming Rascals tuk-tuk tours around Sri Lanka for our community… which feels like such a full circle moment.
If you’re visiting the south of Sri Lanka and want a day in a tuk tuk with a local, send me a message and il pass on his details.
I fully understand why people quit their jobs and move to Cornwall now…

There’s something so strange about Cornwall because it genuinely feels like a different world from the rest of the UK sometimes. Slower mornings, beach cafĆ©s, sunsets that don’t even look real and Sundays that somehow feel longer in the best way.

Today was lifesaving club this morning, cake at the beach café, friends round at home and then ending the day with a sunset walk to the beach 🄹

Cornwall you beauty ā™„ļø

Your 30s are weird because everyone’s life looks completely different.

Some people are climbing the career ladder. Some are getting divorced. Some are having babies. Some are partying every weekend. Some are burnt out. Some are starting over.

18 months ago we had the ā€œperfectā€ life on paper. Good jobs, nice house, nice cars, school runs, routines… and then we gave it all up for a gap year and accidentally ended up resetting our whole lives instead šŸ˜‚

There really is no right way to do your 30s.
How expensive is Sri Lanka REALLY?šŸ‡±šŸ‡°

Honestly… Sri Lanka can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be.

You can stay in little homestays for Ā£5 a night, or go fully luxury and stay in 5* hotels for Ā£400+ a night. We’d say we’re definitely mid-range travellers and usually budget around Ā£100-Ā£150 a night for accommodation, we always look for somewhere with a pool because with kids it just makes life easier.

Food is the same. Some nights we’d eat in hotel restaurants and other days we’d stop at little roadside places and get hoppers, roti and rice for the whole family for around Ā£5.

We also used Uber Eats loads for food delivery to hotels and villas and could easily feed all of us for around £5-£10.

Activities really vary too. Turtle release was around £30 including entry and releasing a few baby turtles and safari can range from around £40 upwards depending on the park, jeep and whether you hire a guide.

Day to day, we gave ourselves around a Ā£30 spending budget and honestly found it really manageable. Some days we’d literally just have a chilled pool day and spend nothing, then use that extra budget the next day for extras, beach clubs or a nicer dinner.

That’s why we love Sri Lanka so much, it works for so many different budgets and travel styles.

What Sri Lanka video should we do next?
If you’re thinking about Sri Lanka for your next trip… THIS is the route we’d recommend every single time.

For a 2 week trip, we’d definitely start on the south coast. We love Galle for a mix of cute cafes, beach clubs and wandering the little streets, but also look at Ahangama, Mirissa and Hiriketiya, or even do a mix of a few because they all have such different vibes.

Our favourite beach personally is Hiriketiya.
It’s got such a chilled surfy feel and some of our favourite sunset spots.

While you’re on the south, the jungle water park near Unawatuna is an absolute MUST, especially with kids. It’s such a hidden gem and honestly one of the funnest days we had. Message us if you want the details because it can be tricky to find online.

From there, head to Yala for safari.
We’ve done Yala multiple times now and every single time has been incredible. Seeing elephants in the wild never gets old.

After safari, head inland to Ella for waterfalls, train views and honestly one of the coolest mountain towns ever. We’d recommend slowing down a bit here because there’s so much to see.

From Ella, you can do the famous train ride all the way to Kandy, or do what we did and stop in Nuwara Eliya for a night which breaks the journey up really nicely.

Then onto Kandy before finishing in Colombo for a night or two before flying home

Biggest tip? Don’t try and rush it all. Mix the travel days with proper beach/chill days because Sri Lanka is one of those places you’ll want to actually soak up, not just tick off.

Save this for your next Sri Lanka trip šŸ‡±šŸ‡°
And watch out for part 2… how much we think this whole 2-week itinerary is likely to cost

Happy 100th birthday to David Attenborough šŸŒ

His documentaries have had such a huge impact on our family, especially the girls. Watching them get excited about animals, oceans, jungles and nature because of the stories he’s told over the years is honestly so special.

I think in a world where childhood can feel increasingly screen-focused and disconnected from the outdoors, he’s reminded so many of us just how important nature really is.

To explore more.
To stay curious.
To protect this planet.

And maybe the best thing we are doing is giving our children… a childhood outdoors šŸ¤

ā€˜No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.’
- David Attenborough
People keep asking why we’ve moved house again… so here’s the honest answer.

Life has a funny way of not going to plan and this is one of those chapters where we’ve just had to go with it.

We’re also constantly questioning what we actually want long term and what normal is supposed to look like anyway.

(I have actually got a few years until I’m 40 but people keep telling me it’s soon šŸ™ƒ)

Maybe there isn’t one right way to do life… maybe we all just need to stop measuring it against everyone else. Anyone agree or am I just delulu??
She’s only 7… but she already has more stories than most adults. šŸ¤

Born in a ski resort in France.
On a German TV show before she could even sit up.
15 flights before she turned one.
Visited 18 different countries…
Has even been to school in Japan.

Sometimes I sit and think about it all and feel so proud of the life we’re giving her…
and then other times, I won’t lie, the mum guilt creeps in.

Because along with all those memories…
she’s also had 6 different houses in 7 years.

And I’ve worried about that more than anything.

So I finally asked her if it bothered her…
if moving so much ever made her feel unsettled.

And she just looked at me and said,
ā€˜As long as I’m with you and daddy.ā€™šŸ„ŗ

And just like that, the guilt went.

Because maybe she won’t grow up with one house full of memories…
but she’ll grow up with a whole world of them. šŸŒ

And honestly… I’ve never felt prouder.
Stop waiting for the right time…
Because personally I don’t think the right time will ever exist…
I’m not saying be reckless… but if you can do something that makes your life feel bigger, fuller, more exciting…

just do it.

Book the trip.
Take the time.
Buy the thing.
Make the memory.

Because one day isn’t promised… and you don’t get this time back.
