None of that is true. A well-designed rooftop is one of the highest-returning investments in a home, thermally, spatially, and in terms of how you actually use the space you own.
Save this before your rooftop becomes a dumping ground.

Since their founding in 2015, they have shaped more than two hundred projects across India - from private residences and villas to restaurants, hospitality projects and community developments.
THE PARTNERSHIP AT OUR CORE
Meghna leads with vision and an instinctive understanding of the emotional potential of outdoor spaces. Shashwat brings structure. strategy and a people-first approach. ensuring every idea is conceptually: technically and financially sound.
Together, they balance creativity with clarity and ambition with feasibility.
“We believe landscape is not an accessory to architecture. It is the first experience a person has of any space. Our approach marries precision with imagination. Clean geometries and layered planting schemes meet carefully chosen material palettes, while light, shadow and seasonal variation bring each space to life.
We take a long view of design studying how foliage evolves, how surfaces weather and how water moves across dilterent terrains, ensuring our landscapes retain their character years after completion.”
- Meghna and Shashwat, founders
The landscape sets the tone for this way of life. Designed by Meghna Dulani and Shashwat Gehenwar of The Pinewood Studio, it draws from the atmosphere of tropical destinations where foliage, water, shade, and moments of discovery shape daily life, creating the feeling of a private resort.
Ideas you can steal: The acre of land on which Ananda sits arrived with its own character. Mature neem and mango trees were spread across the site, already offering shade and structure. A level difference of nearly three feet required careful infill and regrading, prompting a detailed approach to site drainage across the expansive plot. Existing trees were retained, while services and pipelines were planned around root systems to allow surface and stormwater to move efficiently through the site. Much of this work remains unseen, yet it forms the foundation for how the landscape functions and thrives. You too can use the existing landscape to your benefit

Do architects actually see the finished space?
Or do they still see the hundreds of ideas that never made it here?
When I’m filming, I’m discovering the project for the first time. Every angle feels like a new frame.
But the architect has probably walked through this place a thousand times in their head, long before the first stone was laid.
So here’s what I’m curious about…
When you revisit one of your own projects, what do you really see?
Elevated placement wasn’t ritual. It was air circulation logic. A Tulsi at ground level in a dense planting bed underperforms biologically and spatially.
In a well-designed courtyard, the Tulsi kota does three things simultaneously: marks the spiritual centre of the home, creates a daily ritual that pulls you outdoors, and functions as a living focal point that changes with every season.
Most homes treat it as an afterthought. The ones that don’t feel different the moment you walk in.

What came from that is a farmhouse in Janawada where the design feels less like something that arrived and more like something that was always here.
“Hinterland is about listening to the site first and letting it reveal its stories through movement, planting, and play.” Meghna Dulani, The Pinewood Studio.
Save this if you’re building and haven’t had the conversation about what’s worth keeping.

The landscape scheme by Meghna Dulani and Shashwat Gehenwar of works in close dialogue with the built form. Vines along the pergola. Ferns spilling from courtyards. A bench slowly being enveloped by dandelobium. A hidden pickleball court screened by dense creepers. And two sculptures an ape and a deer threading humour and surprise throughout. “It keeps you on your toes, watching, judging, making you pause.” — Shashwat Gehenwar At the end of the house, a mango tree frames the view. A swing hangs beneath it. The ape is always watching

A landscape where nothing is imposed, and everything is negotiated with mango trees that were never moved, boulders that were never erased, and paths that learned to find their own rhythm.
What began as a quiet reading of the land in Hyderabad has now found its place in ELLE as a story of restraint, play, and presence, where architecture steps back and the landscape takes the lead.
The architecture and interiors by Aamir Sharma (AANDH Design Studio) hold this restraint beautifully allowing the home to feel carved by light, air, and landscape rather than defined by walls. There is a clarity in the planning, a softness in transitions, and a generosity in how spaces open into the outdoors.

For them, landscape is not an add-on. It is the experience itself.
