Have you experienced misconceptions?
If a surface is convincing enough, do people stop looking for what suffered underneath?

A clean surface can imply certainty, your judgment might feel certain, but reality is sedimentary — the meaning lives in accumulation, abrasion, and contradiction. People who only trust what appears resolved often miss the labor, instability, and fracture that produced the resolution in the first place- Human identity. The piece appears clean and graphic from far, but look closer, see the mess of charcoal and pencil markings- the metaphor. I’m always surprised by people’s complexities. I like playing with that clean and graphic misconception in my work. “Paint The Town”, a new piece from my, ‘We Became’ collection- a solidification of identity. Just enough information to understand the subject without giving it away. Always clean, always dirty.

I also have yet another collection I’m doing at the same time with a proprietary medium/ process that I’m excited to share in the next couple days…

Until then, I will say that I’m having a blast! Always challenged always moving forward.
There was a hole, or a hollowness in me after I finished my ‘Becoming’ collection. You hear about that, but it’s a very real feeling. What next, where do you go from there? Maybe it wraps into the identity theme, I spent so much time embodying that collection that without it, I was sort of lost. It’s no secret that growth happens through pain, spiritual, emotional, and artistic. The pain of seeing the box you’re in, wanting to break it and build new without knowing how to do that, or what that growth actually looks like. It’s just a feeling like, this isn’t it I know I need to move on. I seem to go through this process a lot with art, I guess that’s the creative process, but it’s happening faster and more often. That means a lot of pain but it also means a lot of growth. I landed on this- the new collection will be;
‘We Became’

A solidification of identity.

The body of work explores the subtle ways people define themselves through gesture, clothing, posture, and adornment. Using cropped compositions, repetition, and saturated fields of color, the paintings examine identity as something gradually absorbed through social behavior and performance.

This piece is called, ‘Yellow Belly’
Yellow belly is slang for coward, what would life look like without a certain amount of courage…

The last of the ‘Becoming’ collection - observing the journey and struggle of human identity. Inspired by European summer, Rosamar. It’s a rebranding of the restaurant, Rosamar in Lisbon. On view at the, Markham Castillo Galeria, in Seville, Spain.

I had quit my job for 6 months to concentrate on art. I committed not to buy anything, or cut my hair or my beard for that time. April 1st I wrapped those 6 months and whoa- what a journey. Besides all the movement with the art, and my growth as an artist, I’ve completely stepped into a new way of approaching life. It has not been easy, it’s been a lot of work and a lot of change. Many things are more difficult in my new life, but the freedom and self reliance are worth every bit of it. Life changes slow, you don’t notice the change in a big way until you look back to where you came from. Look at my eyes in the early video from when I started this, and look at them now, something big has changed. I just want to say- thank you for everyone who has supported me before the 6 months, and everyone who has supported me during it. You have no idea how grateful I am to you. Thank you. You’re born and then you die, and you can do anything you want in the middle.
When two human identities meet and intermingle, especially when they cohabitate - things get interesting. ‘Apple’s Gone Bananas’- Acrylic, charcoal, pencil, mix media 135cm x 185cm
What you if who you are is more of a choice, rather than there being a true, honest you? What if finding an honest version of yourself just means that it’s of your choosing?

In this conversation, I sit down with Lisbon-based artist Josh Wald to talk about identity, creative freedom, and what it really means to bet on yourself.

After more than 20 years in New York working across fashion and music, Josh made a shift, choosing to fully commit to his art and explore a deeper, more different version of himself.

His work plays with distortion, portraiture, and emotion, letting go of the idea that there is a true you.

This is what Creative Current is about. Stories that stay with you, and conversations that make you reflect a little deeper.

My, ‘Live Cinema’ solo exhibition in Lisbon captured and told beautifully by master film maker. Thank you to all of you who came out to support and helped with the creation. For those of you who were not able to make it, the exhibition was, a beautiful art gallery in the Principe Real area of Lisboa. There were medium to large scale paintings hung on the wall, a selection of my larger collection, ‘Becoming’ - a visual look at the struggle of human identity. Along with the paintings were some of my experiments in screen printing done at. The back room I turned into a cinema with the help of. Playing in the cinema was a black and white film that was a feed from the actual exhibition with a one minute delay. The idea was that you’d enter the gallery and eventually make your way to the cinema where you might see yourself entering or moseying about the gallery space officially becoming a character in the film that is our lives, ‘Live Cinema’.
I was bare foot and my shoes were on a podium in the middle of the main room with paint markers next to them. Guests were asked to sign the shoes like a guest book leaving a bit of them behind and I wore the adorned shoes home at the end of the night.
What a fun night, and a big success! Thank you again to everyone that made it so special, thank you to the Lisbon community for the warm welcome and all the support. Special thanks to for his friendship and his never ending support of the arts.

Thank you to for all the support behind the scenes, and Rumi, our dog for being there to brighten our day…

Yes, she’s a vampire. She is the opposite of hidden - repressed desires. Dressed in 1950’s clothing, a time period in American history where inner desires were hidden with a perfect “white picket fence” and an ironed shirt. Through the study of human identity in my work I keep coming across the under layers of people avatars, the not yet expressed, the maybe will never be expressed. It burns underneath until it has no where to go but to come out, or to die.

This piece along with its sister are in Seville, Spain at the, Markham-Castillo-Galeria, a beautiful large modern art gallery.
