1915 & Now: in today’s post, you can see the houses at Staringplein 2–6 (frtl). At the time the older photo was taken, this block housed several different shops, including a bookstore, a dairy shop, and a bicycle shop. On the right is Staringstraat, with the tower of the Roman Catholic Sint Vincentius church visible in the distance. #thenandnowamsterdam
Did you ever visit the aquarium in ARTIS? If not, this is your chance! After a five-year renovation, the aquarium opens its doors again on the 13th of June. Then & Now Amsterdam was there to get a first glimpse of the renovations, the renewed and big aquariums, and the rooms that have never been shown to the public before. This is the first post of the aquarium mini-series.

The aquarium in short:
The ARTIS Aquarium, at Plantage Middenlaan 53, is a famous part of the zoo. The building was designed by the Dutch architect Gerlof Salm and his son Abraham Salm, opened its doors in 1882, and was one of the most modern and largest aquariums in Europe at the time. Ultimately, 1,740 wooden piles were needed for the foundation of the building to bear the enormous weight of the liters of seawater and freshwater. There were sixty different aquariums that gave visitors a glimpse into the wonders of the underwater world, ranging from coral reefs to exotic fish and sharks. #thenandnowamsterdam
1886 & Now: in this photo, you can see the houses at and beyond Prinsengracht 310 on the left-hand side. The photo was taken from the Runstraat bridge, looking towards Westermarkt. The bridge visible in the background is the Berensluis, connecting Elandsgracht on the left with Berenstraat on the right. The entrance to Oude Looiersstraat can also be seen on the left side of the photo. #thenandnowamsterdam
REPOST 🔃 1906 & Now: do you know what Brouwersgracht looked like decades ago? In today’s post you see Brouwesgracht 90-180, looking at bridge 57 and Prinsengracht 2-6 in the back of the photo. Even though the ‘then’ photo was taken over 100 years ago, many of the houses are still intact and look the same today. #thenandnowamsterdam
c. 1890 & Now: In this post, you can see the Raampoort Bridge (no. 165) spanning the Singelgracht. The photo was taken on Marnixstraat, near the Bullebaksluis, looking towards Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat, which is visible on the right-hand side of the image. In the background, on the opposite side of the water, stands the building at Nassaukade 120–122.
The bridge was originally located a few meters further along the Singelgracht. The newer concrete bridge visible in the ‘now’ photo was built in 1969, providing a better connection between Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat and Marnixstraat. #thenandnowamsterdam
1910 & Now: this lovely photo was taken in Genestetstraat, looking in the direction of Bosboom Toussaintstraat. #thenandnowamsterdam
1925 & Now: the photo in today’s post was taken on the Overtoom, looking toward Staringstraat and Staringplein. In the background, you can see the Sint Vincentius Church, which was located at Jacob van Lennepkade 211. The church was built in 1900 and closed its doors in 1989, after which it was demolished. The corner building on the left is Overtoom 428. #thenandnowamsterdam

I’ve always dreamed about sharing my Instagram content offline and made this come true. Thank you for the idea, the support, and making this happen. I can’t believe I’m actually browsing through my own book. This is amazing!
