I used to think a perfectionist was someone who did everything perfectly. Someone who was eager to compete a task and didn’t struggle with lack of motivation. I definitely didn’t identify with this type of person. For some strange reason I thought life came easier to them. I probably got this stereotypical ideal from the movies or TV.
But I’ve come to realize that I actually am a perfectionist. Definitely not in my make believe fantasy world way, but in the real world ‘all or nothing’ personality sort of way.
My ‘all or nothing’ mindset has not served me. It’s held me back from making lasting progress with my weight loss journey. I lost 55lbs a few years ago following WW. I very much had the perfectionist mindset. Even going 1 point over my limit would cause me to write off the whole week. Even if I had a ton of wins, that 1 point was enough to spoil it all.
Man. Even typing this out sounds SO silly.
I had to constantly label myself as “on my diet” or “off my diet” and the rules were very different for each category:
On: restriction, perfection
Off: binge, eat everything I’m “not allowed”
If I can’t do ________ perfectly, I won’t do it at all. ⬆️ (Insert diet/exercise/cleaning/project)
Does that sound like you too?
Overcoming this mindset has been a major focus for me lately. Realizing how much it affects all areas of my life is really eye-opening. I’ve been strengthening my non-perfectionist mindset with little things. Like: I don’t have time to fully clean the kitchen. But I can put away these dishes and wipe the counter. Guess what? Later on I have a few more minutes to finish it up and I don’t have a huge job waiting for me at the end of the day.
I realize now that striving for balance in my life will be a life long pursuit and requires daily work. There is no ‘finish line’ because life is always changing and evolving. 💕
1 cup milk (I use macadamia)
1 big handful of spinach
Frozen pineapple
Frozen mango
Frozen banana
Frozen riced cauliflower
Sprinkle of hemp hearts
Sprinkle of ground flax
Juice of 1 lemon
1/2 inch chunk of ginger
Splash of water
It tastes just like a tropical slushy drink and I can’t get enough of it 🙌🏼 and it hit the spot after my long walk in the sun today.
It’s been a bit since I really touched base here. This whole year has been a trip and I just didn’t feel like I had anything productive to contribute to this space lately. Which sounds weird because I have been addicted to watching TikTok and 99% of the content there is purely entertainment only. Which I think is a big contribution in its own way. A way to get my mind off of everything that’s going on. Even if it’s for a few minutes. Or an hour 😂🙈
I had a major reality check today. Ev and I went for a walk this morning and I was feeling pretty good about my movement lately. I put Ev down for a nap, showered and went to find something different to wear. Something that wasn’t leggings and a tee since it’s gorgeous outside. I found a whole drawer of shorts that I sort of forgot about and guess what?
None of them fit. Not even close. 🤦🏻♀️ I wasn’t totally shocked that they didn’t button but I could barely get them up and over my hips 😭
So.
Back in the drawer they went and instead of getting down on myself, I immediately felt... a rush of motivation. ✨ Motivation to really take my health seriously again. It is SO easy for extra pounds to go unnoticed when all I wear is stretchy fabric all day everyday. In the past, I would have gotten really down on myself in this situation. Probably would have eaten my feelings and declared that my diet starts the next day. Then comes the diet cycle. Maybe you know the one: Restrict ➡️ Eat more/Binge ➡️ Feel guilt for eating food ➡️ Restrict.
I am so glad I got off that ride. Although living a life without “dieting” while still trying to lose weight is a strange place that I’m still learning how to navigate. I do know one thing and that is sharing my journey here has always been a huge motivator for me so getting back to regular posting is a huge benefit. Hopefully for both of us!
Sometimes eating disorders don’t look obvious from the outside. I was praised for my body when it looked like this. Which insinuated that this body was better than the body I had just months before. It’s the same body, but it looked a little different.
The more I step away from diet culture and evaluate my relationship with food throughout my life, I can honestly say I can’t ever remember a time that I had a truly healthy relationship with food. Even from a young age... but that’s for another day. My eating disorder has looked different through different stages in my life. During the time in my life around this photo, I knew I had an unhealthy relationship with food. I was very aware and was the first time I was really on a “diet”. I don’t want to trigger anyone so I won’t share the details but I vividly remember what I used to eat (because it was the same thing everyday) and my total calories I’m calculating now are clocking in at less than 500 calories a day.
Again: that’s LESS than 500 calories a day. Most of those calories came from fruit and veggies.
AND (if that’s not bad enough)
I would workout twice a day as hard as I could. Like 30 mins hard run on the treadmill, weights at the gym. Then I would WALK to and from the pool and do a water aerobics workout at night.
If I ate anything that was more calories one day, I would go for a long run to make up for it. Even if it was a salad. A SIDE SALAD. I wouldn’t make plans with friends if it involved eating or if it interrupted my scheduled gym sesh.
I wish I could say I recovered from disordered eating however I never have. It has manifested in different ways over the years and diet culture had kept me chained to my disordered ways.
Breaking free from the food rules and diet mentality takes work everyday and will take time for my mind to heal. Having a healthy relationship with food is constant work. I finally feel like it’s getting a little easier each day to quiet the noise and make peace with food. If you think you are struggling with an eating disorder, please get help 💕
