TGIF! What's everyone's weekend plans?

After work today we will drive through the night and wake up to a sunrise along the Sacramento River, that's the semi plan at least. Kind of "wherever the wind takes us we will end up" planning style for this weekend.

Got my portable work battery ready. Got my books picked out. Ceviche packed. My cameras all packed up.

Looking forward to tomorrow! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for weekend!

This photo is my capture of my two favorite explorers and travel mates and. I'm ready to pick up where we left off last trip. See you end of May!

How often do you journal?

When I probably need to journal the most is when I don't. Sometimes life gets so chaotic and frenzied that you don't even have a moment to spare to sit amongst your thoughts. Always have my weatherproof journal with me when I'm out in the wild just in case the mood strikes.

It seems like I'm the only person who does this but usually after some time, usually a year or so, I read them all and then I'm like "holy hell what I was thinking" and I normally toss them out. I'm trying to start hanging onto them.

Honestly this sounds dramatic but I want my grandkids (hopefully I live past a 100 so great grandkids) to discover them after Allen and I passed away within minutes of each other in bed. Then they can be like "Ohmygoodness I didn't know Nana and Grandpops were such insightful people, so ahead of their time people." Just kidding it'll be more like "Wow they were really into walking around their new house naked!"
Excited to get through the week and hit the road again this weekend! There's this assumption when I travel I must be spending tons of moola. Anyone who has traveled with me knows I'm cheap as hell. On that "Live below your means" tip. Here's some half assed things I do to save money while exploring. Feel free to share some of your tips!

-Pack/freeze food in advance. One of my best hiking trips involved us eating ribs along the trek because it was leftovers from my sisters party.

-Bring random booze people left at my house. Nothing like a night cap surprise by the fireplace.

-Fuel efficient car w trunk space. Jeep in photo not mine. Pushing it my car gets 50mpg. Both Big Al and I fit in the trunk with seats down.

-No hotels. Unless we are traveling w someone who has hotel points it's car camp or camping.

-BLM land. There's a great app ALLSTAYS that shows you FREE land you can camp on. Bring a shovel and trash bags since there's no bathrooms. It's kind of wild but also super freeing.

-Prepare what to bring in advance. This I'm still working on. So I don't have to buy last minute overpriced items on the road.

-Do without. Is it really that important? Leave it at home or don't buy it.

-Invest in a National park pass $80 bucks and share that thing. I have two I use for work. When I'm not working I loan those babies out. People mail it back to me for the cost of a stamp. If you camp in national parks it's sometimes discounted. Federal lands you get in free or camp discounted.

-Research the area and choose budget friendly activities. Basically look for great hikes. You'll get some exercise in, you'll feel great, and there's usually a beautiful payout view at the end of it all.

-Be ok with staying back. If other people want to explore places in the city that I don't really want to spend money at instead of focusing on FOMO think about JOMO. JOMO is the JOY of missing out. Read a book, smoke a joint, take a minute to relax, take a nap.

-Bring a flask. Or go and bring your own drinks. No need for a costly bar tab. LOL.

The thing that never cost money is the people you spend time with. Making memories is priceless. Remember that my lovelies. ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’จ
I'm a Dog Mom now. Let me formally introduce you to my baby Kuma Star. The birthday present I've always wanted. She's 2 1/2 months and her personality gets funner every day. Picking up new commands, has sitting down pat, and eating lettuce in her free time. When I'm doing work she's laying on my feet or in my lap and she's snuggled up next to me when I'm reading. White hairs have been peeking out on her face make her look like a old lady baby. She's this compact little thing full of energy and love. Couldn't imagine life without her.

Sorry in advance but she's going to take over my stories and my post. ๐Ÿพ
Is reading healing for you?

I've picked up a lot of books about relationships with parents lately, this one being the current read. Hopefully it can help me look deeper into father child dynamics, sprinkled in with race and class. Gregory is a masterful poet so I doubt his prose would be nothing short of beautiful.

Most of my reads are the things I'm working through currently. I realized that the relationships I have with my own parents I've been trying to decipher for the last 3 decades. Something I may always have to decipher.

It took a long time for my parents to see me as a whole person instead of just a child that they could mold by guilt to take care of them in old age. Very much a forced upon asian prescription. It took me a long time to see my parents as humans full of flaws, dreams and desires as well.

I'm hoping this book helps me see another nuanced aspect of family that I've yet to reflect about.

Happy Weekend Reading!
Do you track your steps?

So I got my step counter on my wrist again and will be trying to hit that 10k a day goal. Let's keep each other motivated and accountable!

One step at a time! One trail at a time!
I finished ZERO books in April. 0. Zilch. Nada.
Picked them up, started them, didn't finish a damn thing. Lol. How many did you read?

Reading I can catch up on. Moments in life I can't.

My friend Mike was reminding me the other day and to paraphrase him "People who focus on the past are depressed and the ones who focus on the future are anxious. Just live for the present."

Sometimes the present involves reading and sometimes it involves me just enjoying where I'm at.
Any Joan Didion fans out there? Which one of her books is your fave?

When older essays finally get published, reworked or never seen before, I wonder if they are that good or they were not seen for a reason? It's like when they release a new 2pac song. Wonder if it's because even their sub par work is still good or people looking to make a quick buck, or both.

Back on that reading game y'all!
I love having a home to call my own but I can't wait to be on the open road again. Seeing how far the hybrid can take me on a tank of gas. How cheap I can live on the road. Sleeping on free open spaces, leave no trace principles. Living and breathing a creative workspace again.

2021 Trip list so far.
-Joshua tree (of course, no place like home)
-Minnesota! (I'm coming for you baby girl )
-Inyo National Forest
-Utah's "BIG FIVE" National Parks (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef)
-Lake Powell
-Sacramento River (next week)
-Yellowstone National Park
-South Idaho
-Texas!

In addition to checking off these places, my jobs and school full time, wish me luck as I study for my real estate license and hopefully test before the year ends!
