We left Tokyo for a quiet early-autumn stay at, a small luxury hotel in Karuizawa, and a big part of this trip was actually the food.
Inside the hotel is SHIN, where dinner is a multi-course Japanese experience led by Head Chef Hiroshi Tanaka and supervised by Chef Zaiyu Hasegawa of Tokyo’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant Den.
The menu follows the seasons, with ingredients including produce from Nagano and Gunma.
We enjoyed each course with a wine pairing, and what made the evening even more special was getting to share it with my sister. Since we live so far apart, moments like these where we can just sit together, enjoy good food and catch up on life mean so much to me. 🥹🤍
The next morning started just as slowly, with a choice between a Japanese-style or Western breakfast. Both are so hearty and filling, so definitely come hungry!
That slow, unhurried feeling carried through the rest of our stay too. Our room had its own sauna and bath, so between all the good food, quiet surroundings and quality sister time, it was such a nice change of pace from Tokyo.
And if you’re visiting Karuizawa but not staying at the hotel, you can still dine at SHIN as the restaurant is also open to non-hotel guests.
If your ideal Karuizawa trip involves eating well and doing very little in between, save this one for later. 🍃
