For today’s experiment, I’ve abandoned years of education, professional expertise, and hours of content planning.

Instead, I’m a 35-year-old mother of 3 making chicken nuggets in a swimsuit while my husband golfs.

Let’s see if this performs better.

My hypothesis is yes.

Summer learning doesn’t have to look like school. These are the picks I grabbed for my own 4 and 6 year old — chosen as a psychologist and a mom who needs things that actually work.

📚 Workbooks (Reading / Writing / Math)

Research shows kids can lose up to 2–3 months of academic progress over summer — what educators call the “summer slide.” These workbooks are my low-lift fix. Ten minutes a day is genuinely enough to maintain the skills they built all year. We do them at the kitchen table, no pressure, no grades. Spaced practice always beats a panicked catch-up in August.
Best for: ages 4–7 · Grades PreK–1

✂️ Practical Skills Books (Shoe Tying / Scissor Cutting)

These are underrated. Fine motor skills don’t just happen — they need repetition to become automatic. Shoe tying and scissor work build the same hand-eye coordination used in writing, drawing, and keyboarding. They also build independence, which is huge for a kid starting kindergarten or first grade. My kids feel genuinely proud when they master something from these.
Best for: ages 3–6 · Fine motor + self-help skills

🎨 Art Supplies (Construction Paper, Crayons, Markers, Colored Pencils)

Don’t underestimate a blank piece of paper and some markers. Open-ended art is one of the highest-ROI activities for young children — it builds sustained attention, creative problem-solving, and emotional regulation all at once. These are the exact brands we keep stocked at home. No structured project needed. Just let them make stuff.
Best for: ages 3+ · Creative play + fine motor

Summer is NOT the time to coast — and I say that as a psychologist AND a mom.

Here’s the research no one’s putting in their haul videos:

📊 Kids can lose up to 2-3 months of academic progress over summer — that’s the “summer slide,” and it disproportionately hits reading and math.

The fix? It doesn’t have to be formal. It just has to be consistent.

This is what I grabbed on Amazon for my 6 and 4 year old to keep their brains engaged without making summer feel like school:

📚 Workbooks — reading, writing, and math. Even 10-15 minutes a day maintains neural pathways built during the school year. Spaced repetition > cramming, always.

✂️ Skill books — shoe tying, scissor cutting. Fine motor skills need practice to stick. These build independence AND executive function.

🖍️ Art supplies — construction paper, crayons, markers, colored pencils. Open-ended art is one of the highest-ROI activities for kids: it builds focus, creativity, and emotional regulation simultaneously.

You don’t need a curriculum. You need a cart.
