These are the books I am sharing with my book clubs this term:

🌙Hidden Treasure by Jessie Burton – I have a real mixed-bag of readers in the grade ¾ book club so this one had a mixed reaction. Some found it a bit too difficult, and a bit sad. However, others really loved it. I did share this book with my grade 4 daughter and we spent a bit of time talking about the setting (WWI London) and the plot and predicting what would happen. I think this really opened up the book for her as I think she would have struggled on her own. That said, it’s wonderful historical fiction with a touch of magical realism and lots of twists and turns, great for advanced grade ¾ readers but perhaps better suited to years 5/6. This group loves a graphic novel so they were very excited by the prospect of reading Treasure in the Lake. I’ve heard that some have already read it more than once.

🏃🏽‍♂️Run by Sarah Armstrong – this was a BIG hit. Some of the kids felt like it started a little slow, but they were enthralled by the end and understood that the set up was necessary. We had a really fantastic discussion about decisions made by the characters, what the kids would do in similar situations and comparisons to other books (some of them are reading Two Wolves by Tristan Bancks as part of their literature circles and saw lots of parallels). I can’t wait to hear what this group thinks of Wild Unknown. They are really excited by the idea of a future Melbourne and a mystery as well.

🚀Red Star Rebels by Amie Kaufman – this was another hit that the kids had lots to say about. My group are not really interested in romance, so they didn’t really care for that aspect. However, we had a really interesting discussion about a story that takes place only over a matter of hours, the idea that within the next 50 years we could be living on Mars, other science fiction reads and the twists and turns of the plot. I talked Liza McLean up earlier in the year and as this group loves a good mystery, I think it’s the perfect choice.

Encouraging a love of reading during the beginning stages of learning to read is incredibly important. As says, take home readers are the "vegetables" of learning to read - necessary, good for you but not very fun. It is therefore important to also give children a steady diet of appealing, accessible and fun books that will entice them to read for enjoyment. This is a selection of some of our faves, though there are SO MANY more to choose from. If you need books for your reader, feel free to reach out at any time via DM or via and we would be happy to help. You can also view all the Younger Reader titles at.
