Himeji Castle is not just a pretty sight. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. With its elegant, white appearance, it is widely considered Japan’s most spectacular castle. The pathway leading to the castle is lined with cherry trees so I can only imagine how beautiful it will look in the springtime. What’s most unbelievable is that unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and is one of Japan’s remaining twelve original castles. What are you waiting for? Add it to your list of places to visit while in Japan.

Four hour train ride. How do you spend your time traveling?
I have been totally off the grid for a long time, and here’s the reason why. I started my Instagram page to share my love of Japan and my adopted city of Kagoshima which is now like home. At first, Instagram was only a gallery of pictures but little by little that changed.

In my quest to get more followers people suggested to also put up highlights and shortly afterwards stories followed. By the time I edited my photos, wrote a caption, answered comments and made comments on other people’s posts I was spending hours a day on Instagram. Then Reels came along! More pictures and videos to edit and don’t forget the music.

What followed was Instagram burnout. I lost all the joy I once had of sharing Japan with you. So, I decided to take an Instagram break which lasted over a year and a half. Recently, my motivation has slowly returned. My love of Japan and all things Japanese has never changed and now I’m ready to share them with you again.

I’m starting off with Mt. Sakurajima at sunrise. I live across the bay from one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It erupts over 1,000 times a year. People often ask me if it’s scary to live so close to an active volcano but the local people prefer to see plumes of ash because that way we know there’s no build up of pressure.

In my next series of posts I’m going to share a few of my favourite spots in Yamaguchi prefecture. I was surprised at how much the prefecture has to offer and I really wish I had more time to explore more but that will have to wait for another trip.

Although Akama Shrine’s story is a sad one, its beauty left a lasting impression on me. The shrine is dedicated to Antoku, the six year old emperor who perished in the sea in the arms of his grandmother when it was learned the battle had been lost. The inner sanctuary, with its reflecting, blue pond and bright red facade makes for Instagram worthy photos.

Many people in Japan flock to parks and river sides in spring time to view the cherry blossoms. At this time of year you can see families, young couples, and groups of friends eating obento under the cherry trees. This year I got my girlfriends together and we kayaked down Kotsuki river. It was a completely different perspective seeing the cherry blossoms from the river. Many people on the river side waved to us and took our picture. It was like being famous for two hours😂

🌸 The video doesn’t have any music only the sound of birds
🌸 I might look like a pro kayaker but I almost fell out 😆 (pic 7)

Go to the top of Mount Misen on your next visit to Miyajima! Temples, statues and panoramic views are just a short rope way ride away.

When visiting Miyajima Island, I highly recommend taking the rope way up Mount Misen. The peak is 500 meters from sea level and the rope way will take you up the first 400 meters. The last 100 meters you have to walk. When I went, it took about 30 minutes because of ice patches. I saw two young guys go down hard on their butt 😂 There are several Buddhist structures near the peak which belong to Daisho-in Temple at the base of the mountain. At the top, there’s an observatory with panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea.

If you have time, you can hike up one of the three trails that leads to the top. The Daishoin trail is the easiest and takes 1.5-2 hours to reach the top. This will save you the ¥1,840 rope way fee!

Check out my reels for a panoramic view!

Although many people go to Miyajima island for the sole purpose of seeing Itsukushima shrine, there are many things to do and see in the island. One of my favourite places was Daisho-in temple which is situated at the foot of Mt. Misen and just a few minutes walk from the exit of Itsukushima shrine. Although it’s one of the most important shrines for Shingon Buddhism in Japan, what caught my attention were all the different statues with most of them wearing hand knitted hats. I couldn’t narrow down the pictures to fit in one post so this is post two of two. Check out both posts and let me know which one you like best.

Itsukushima shrine in Hiroshima has an interesting story behind it. The shrine was built over the water because Miyajima Island, in its entirety, was considered a god. It is said a location where the tides rise and fall was chosen specifically so the god would not be damaged when they constructed the shrine. Inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1996, people from all over Japan, and the world, come to see this floating shrine.

Unfortunately, when we visited, the famous torii gate was under construction and it was low tide so we couldn’t see the beautiful reflection of the shrine on the water which gives me two good reasons to go back!

If you don’t have a car the easiest way to get there is by ferry from Hiroshima (¥4,000 return). Be sure to make a reservation.
