“As brothers, we’re extremely honest with each other. We’re absolutely vicious. But the arrangement is always the fun part. And especially when the other person likes the song as well, it seems like a big win.”

Often when I film sessions at a festival, I come away with more than I do from most live shows I manage to catch. There’s something about a musician standing in front of just me and my cameras, playing pretty much unamplified. That was true filming at Smithwick’s Experience in Kilkenny; but later that evening, my friend David and I sat in the Watergate Theater with our jaws on the floor. He lives the music he plays, and on whatever instrument he picks up – guitar, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, piano – he’s one of the best you’ll see. Earlier that day, he recorded his original Tombstone Disposition, Emile Grimshaw’s You And A Canoe, and the traditional I’m Sorry Mama.

HORSEBATH X THE INFLUENCES, part 1

After meeting some of at last year, I was sure I wanted to film them the next chance I got, which happened to be at in Ireland last month.

I met up with the Canadian band at the location they were rehearsing and filmed 3 full band songs. The first one is out now, and it's a cover of 'Lyin' Down The Middle' by Dillard & Clark.

HORSEBATH have more European shows coming up later this month, in Paris, Amsterdam and Rotterdam among others. Go see them, their show at was one of my highlights of #kilkennyroots this year.

“ and... I would have died for those bands. I was that obsessed with them. We’ve been influenced by so many bands that have only stuck around in our heads for maybe a year or two. But then you kind of come back to those bands and realize that so many of the melodies and ideas that you’ve been writing just organically have been all over their music.”

Brandon agrees: “The Killers are very much an element of our sound, whether we like it or not, because they were our biggest love when we were 12 or 13. We do an acoustic stripped-back cover of Read My Mind. And when it’s just a guitar, you can really see how well written that song is. Both of the songs that we chose are produced in a 2000s way, and we are just stripping back both of the songs with the guitar; but it really only highlights how well written those songs are. I’d have killed to write a song like Read My Mind. I think that song is just pure genius. It’s a song that I definitely wish that I had written.”

Brandon and Ashley Watson are on the road somewhere in England when we talk. They’re staying at an old inn, “like something from an English fairy tale,” Ashley says, where the Wi-Fi barely reaches. It suits them. have spent most of the last decade in motion: from the open mics of Wexford and the streets, to Leipzig where they now live, rehearse for 80 euros a month, and volunteer and host shows at a bookstore.

Their music carries the imprint of everything that got under their skin growing up; on constant radio rotation, and at full teenage volume. That early devotion didn’t disappear. It settled in. For this session, they brought two covers to Kilkenny on May 1st of this year: Bell X1’s 'Rocky Took a Lover', and The Killers’ 'Read My Mind'. Watch them perform those stripped back covers and their own 'Roadside Rainbow' for.

Rocky Took A Lover by Bell X1 in particular was a very important song for The Ocelots. “I think it was practically always on the radio. And I think Ireland was lucky enough to have that in constant rotation on the radio and it being a really good song. It’s so ambitiously produced and so carefully written. It’s just one of those brilliant Irish songs. I think most Irish people can kind of resonate with the melancholy of it and the character-driven kind of Irish back and forth that they have about the universe. Maybe it’s an overstatement in other people’s eyes, but I genuinely think it’s one of the most brilliant songs written in the history of Irish music.”

‘Utrecht – May 15, you around?’ The subject of ’s email was short and sweet. And, I happened to be around. So, I saw the show, brought a camera and filmed a song in the pretty retro dressing room afterwards. One camera, one take – done in 10 minutes. His fourth time recording for The Influences. A fox crossed the road in front of my car at night driving back from seeing Seamus Fogarty. The next morning I woke up to cows running in the field next to the house. On the way to the airport this morning a buzzard flew over the car.

Those are the things my daughter will find most interesting to hear about when I get home later today.

And if that wasn't enough, I also recorded 14 sessions in 4 days at Kilkenny Roots with a beautiful mixture of artists playing the festival and Irish musicians coming to town only to film for The Influences. It’s not lost on me how much of a privilege it is to travel somewhere and have people open up their venues, houses, schedules and minds to create something together.

14 sessions, with artists from Ireland, Sweden, Canada and the USA. That's 42 songs, recorded on 3 cameras and a Zoom H6 recorder.

This years Kilkenny visit went surprisingly smooth, and I cannot wait to work on all the recordings. Thank you to all the musicians for your efforts, trust, for improvising and your art.

Special thank yous to David, Nicola and the boys, Gary, Karol, Jude, Kev, Liam, John Cleere, Michael at The Hole In The Wall, everyone at Kilkenny Roots and Martin, Ignacio, Becca and everyone else at Smithwick’s.

If you'd like a heads up on who we filmed, you can become a supporter on Patreon, and find out there! If not, you can subscribe to the newsletter and find out whenever they are published in the coming months/year.

For now, I will try and catch some sleep on this plane.
