This took me nearly a week and I took a few photos of it finished and then the rains started and it’s felt like they haven’t stopped since and before you know it it’s February and months and months later and I’ve not got to use it 😂😂 So this is as good as it gets! No instagram rugs or throws or cushions. No lanterns. No fairy lights. No strategically placed, well, anything. But I’m proud of it. It took me forever and it was on the hottest day while the baby sat in a bouncer in the shade. And I can’t wait to use it properly. Next year! If it survives…

We really love the pattern. We could have done it bigger but I wanted to have a feel of real indoor tiles. We went to Seville a few years back and loved all the painted and tiled floors. This feels like that every time I walk on it.

Products we used:

1) Zinsser 1-2-3 (2 coats over concrete)
2) Sandtex Masonry - Gravel (2 coats)
3) Sandtex Masonry - White (stencil over the grey)
4) Stencil - Amira faux-tile stencil 8” (203mm) multi 6 tile - 2 pack
5) Sika Patio Seal (2 coats to weather seal it)

It held up to a busy Pride party a few days after finishing it, lots of kids running on it and v heavy rain storms, but then there was snow and the tree cutter and well it’s looking muddy so I can’t say how it’s holding up now.

I love my friends downstairs loo. Every time you go in there it feels like heading into a spa. Even the tap is a waterfall effect and makes it feel luxurious. Her plan is to fill the walls with plants as well.

My neighbours gorgeous pink door and bee door knocker! Our little boy loves pink, it’s his favourite everything, so he is insisting on a pink door and because of him I’ve started to like pink. So the blue door that was going to go yellow is now going pink in the spring. Sadly a new door is way out of budget so we will need to stay with the old one we have but I’ve invested in a thermal door curtain for the winter to save on bills.

My favourite house on our daily walk with the baby. I love the black and white tiles, the gorgeous symmetry of being double fronted and the Mediterranean planting - Brighton has a microclimate so these plants really thrive in the hot weather. It’s so beautiful. And they’re even on Instagram!

Life is currently a beautiful mess! We had a second baby boy this March, Bailey, and life has kind of stalled into survival mode for the last 2.5 years! The house is a mess of kids toys and sterilising equipment and nappies. Finn spills his food on the sofa and I’m just glad he’s eaten. He loves the most brightly coloured plastic toys rather than the pretty wooden ones and I’m just happy he’s playing in an imaginative way. It’s about as un-instagrammable as you could get!! But we still have house plans. We may even get around to them one day. But it just matters a lot less now. We are incredibly grateful that IVF worked for us not once but twice (although it took several goes to make Bailey, plus £10,000) and we are just taking life easy for the time being.
Christmas 2021. Pretty much identical decoration to 2020, I couldn’t be bothered to do anything different!

Does anyone else feel like the pandemic has shown them that material things really don’t matter? Making Christmas magical for Finn hasn’t been about money, it’s been about walks around the neighbourhood to look at fairylights, and a stocking full of toy cars that cost me £5 for 10 at Asda which he adores. He hasn’t even had another present, he’s got no clue that’s normal and it’s so charming to see his joy at these little cars. He loved seeing the tree all decorated when he came home from nursery. He was so charmed by it. But it’s been lovely to have less Instagram excess. Although I can say that from the privileged position of owning a wonderful house in Brighton so I don’t forget how lucky that is.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas and new year.

Christmas! Here’s my Christmas window this year. It took several hours to draw it using 3mm chalk pens but I’m quite proud of it. It’s the Brighton Pavilion with baubles, plus our local parks clock tower with snowy trees. Even our postman has complimented it which is nice. I organised them whole local area this year to decorate their windows for Christmas, every street is doing a different day and there’s a map and trail to follow. It’s been tiring but a lot of fun. I’ve hung some baubles on our olive tree and Nathan got a wreath for the door from the local makers fair.

I haven’t had much enthusiasm for house stuff lately. The house is basically the same, no progress, woodwork is still unpainted, still no hearths on bathrooms, storage not done in the attic etc etc. But at least at christmas I manage to do a few things! I’ve also had pneumonia so feeling pretty poorly but getting over it slowly (recuperation is slow with a toddler!)

Finns 2nd birthday! Although norovirus means it’s a party for 3, again, after lockdown 3.0 took out his 1st birthday.

I know it’s an Instagram no no but with a toddler and the expense of babysitters means we spend way more time in than out these days so I’m seriously considering replacing our lovely mirror with a wall mounted TV instead. Our TV fits in the bookshelves but it means it’s actually quite small and it would be so nice to be able to sit and use the corner sofa properly - we’ve never used the corner as it’s the other end of the sofa (and putting it the window end would get in the way of the Christmas tree each year!). But all probably pie in the sky as that’s a bigger project when we can’t even finish painting woodwork from 2.5 years ago 😂

We have flowers!!! I’m ridiculously excited about this. I’ve owned this Aeschynanthus Japhrolepsis (Lipstick plant) for 4 years, it’s never flowered and suddenly loads! It makes me so happy to see it in the bathroom, apparently the steam from the shower and overhead light from the velux makes the right environment for it - downstairs it got a bit dry. It’s so pretty!

You’ve got to take the wins at the moment. Life with a toddler is exhausting with this much illness - since end of May he’s had viral induced wheeze, tonsilitis, suspected meningitis, a drip for dehydration, Norovirus, chest infection, severe ear infection, bronchiolitis and now Norovirus again. We’ve had norovirus and bronchitis but luckily not the others. Anyone else suffering from low immune systems?! I know his age bracket (2 this weekend) has suffered quite a bit.

Our little cupboard loo, tucked away in a small space beneath the stairs on the ground floor. A downstairs loo is the best, we use it far more than upstairs. When we moved in it was already done but not very nicely, the floorboards were rotten so we painted the walls white and laid some new lino. But then we saved up and properly redid it with a new compact corner sink (which gives so much more room), new Scintilla tiles on the floor, leftover tiles from the kitchen on the walls, a new loo that actually flushes more than once every 15 minutes, and Manor House Grey on the walls. We also finally framed these two prints from.11 and hung them today and they really finish off the room. We love them.
