I don’t know where this idea came from but if your dog is scared, please comfort them.
It’s cracker night on Saturday in Hobart. You can look on the Worksafe Tasmania website for a list of permits issued in your area.
Be prepared. Talk to a vet about meds in advance if needed and provide a safe area for your pup. Try and block the sound with some music, offer calming activities such as snuffle mats, licki mats, chews, games or just cuddling.
Make sure your pup can’t escape or injure themselves by keeping them inside. Bathrooms or under beds are often a good option.

Having a dog comes with a lot of responsibility - not only for your dog’s health, training, food, shelter etc but also your responsibility to others in the community.
This means treating people, dogs and other animals with respect. It’s not ok for your dog to harass, jump on, chase, or annoy other dogs, people or animals. Just like it isn’t ok for kids or adults to do that.
Things happens and your dog may act in an unexpected way (just like kids) but it’s then the guardians responsibility to step in and make sure everyone is ok and maybe remove your dog from the situation.
Birdie can be an idiot with unknown dogs so I keep a wide berth and ask people to keep a distance. I wouldn’t let her harass another dog, person, wallaby, magpie or cat.
So please be respectful to others that use public spaces 🐶

Puppies are teenagers between about 6 months old and 3. That’s a long time!
It can be a difficult and confusing time for families but there are things you can do to make it a bit easier.
The first thing (that I forgot to say) is sleep! 💤
Although they don’t need the 20 hours a day of sleep with a little puppy they still need around 16-18 hours. If they are not getting adequate rest they are going to be very fractious 😤
When Birdie is overtired there is a lot more reactivity, barking, mouthing, zoomies and silly behaviour. They are probably still going to need some help in making some good choices to nap so don’t put away their pen/ crate/ sleep area just yet.
They are going to have more capacity to go for longer walks and do more exercise but make sure you are doing some chill, slow, sniffy walks. If all we ever do is ramped up exercise our pups are going to get ever more ramped up. Long lead walks in a natural environment are key 🍂
If your puppy is social keep up that socialisation but with mates they already have. Their ‘puppy license’ where everyone is forgiving of their silliness is running out (for other dogs and people) and we don’t want them to get in too much trouble. They might need some help to make good social decisions.
Go back to basics in training. They may have forgotten how to do some things and you may have been a bit slack with training now that puppy school is over 🫢
When was the last time you did some easy and rewarding tricks? Paws up, spin, target, give are all easy tricks and keep your bond strong 🐩
Give your pup plenty of opportunity to do natural behaviours as these are a great outlet for energy to calm their hormone filled brains 🧠
Are there some safe choices you can provide? Which chew would they prefer? Which way do they want to walk? Which bed do they like?
Remember this is the time they would naturally be leaving their parents to find a new family so micromanaging them is going to backfire. Remember how annoying that was when you were a teenager??
I’m not saying get rid of your house rules but respect your dog and what they need.
And last and most importantly- BE PATIENT ❤️
Adolescence can be a very challenging time for many families. The crazy puppy biting has stopped, your puppy has learned some good skills and you think you’re doing well then BAM! Adolescence 👻
Puppies are teenagers from around 6 months to 2-3 years, depending on the breed. Their bodies are getting bigger and look like adult dogs but their brains are still mush 🥔
Hormones are running the show and they aren’t great at making good decisions. You might notice your young dog forgetting previously learned skills, getting super distracted when out and about, becoming reactive to things they haven’t had a problem with in the past, wanted to chew and rip things ups a lot more and generally getting into mischief. This is normal!

There is a lot of things that affect this but these are the main ones.
The basics:
Keep a diary for 3-4 days so that they are actually getting met. It’s easy to think things are fine when actually the pup is missing out.
💤 Sleep (18-20 hours of good, deep sleep. Maybe move the sleeping area somewhere quiet. Maybe put a camera up so they can check if the puppy is actually sleeping)
🍗 Food - feeding at least 3 times a day. Good qualitative food and a range of consistencies.
🐕 Exercise- 2 x 20-40 minutes walks a day. Does the pup get over tired towards the end of the walk? Make it shorter. Playing and noting body language.
🍂 Enrichment- lots of different items to chew with lots of different consistencies. Carrots, bully sticks, bones, celery, ice blocks..
Lots of things to rip up (cardboard), digging, toys, watching the world, time in nature on a long lead to explore..
Handling - maybe the puppy doesn’t love being touched. Watch body language. Do petting consent tests.
Toiletting - does this happen more when puppy needs to go to the toilet?
Make a diary of when it is happening and it’s probably one of the above. If not rule out medical causes. Big ones are UTI, ear infection, sore gums
