Taking a tea break. Not so much because of the damp gray weather, but because I’ve been hiding in the cellar for most of the day (and yesterday) engaged in a long-overdue sorting and purging. It’s not an activity I’m naturally inclined to undertake, but Stacy spent last weekend doing the same and it really is starting to look much better now. Rather a trip down memory lane to go through some boxes that hadn’t been opened in ages and find things from my own past as well as much older items. And so many things that really needed to go away. Not shown in these photos: three enormous bags of trash, four boxes of papers for recycling and several boxes of books that will be going away. Come to think of it, it is rather cathartic once you get well underway.

Well, here we are nearly at the middle of January. There was a bit of melting over the weekend, but more snow again last night (just a bit). The deer have been absolutely ravenous this year, to the point of ripping the burlap off the rhododendrons so they can eat the leaves. I’ve never seen them this destructive in thirty-five years of living here - they don’t even run away when Gia goes out and barks at them. It’s starting to look like deer-proof fencing may move to the top of the priority list for next summer’s projects.

No, we’re not cutting rhubarb today. Or picking peaches. But we are making a batch of rhubarb and peach jam, using materials we harvested last summer. It seemed an especially good morning for making a batch of jam, as we’ve had a mixed bag of snow and sleet (and perhaps a bit of freezing rain) and there’s been little incentive to go anywhere. We had such lovely harvests last summer that we invested in a separate freezer, and stocked it with pears, elderberries, cherries, grapes and blackberries, as well as the peaches and rhubarb. The rhubarb & peach has turned out to be a hit, and I expect it will be quite a lot of fun to do a little experimenting and see what else we can come up with.

It was a #ThrowbackThursday Christmas this year, after Stacy stopped to get me a bottle of wine for my stocking and referenced a photo from our 2018 trip to France on her phone. She (and the store manager), went down a rabbit hole together starting at the beginning of the photo album for locations and wine references! She ended up getting bottles from places we visited on that trip, (as well as three others to round out the case.) The bottles varied in price, yet are all amazing being tied to that adventure in northern France. Her favorite was easily the #hospicesdebeaune 2017, primarily because the hospital in that town was one of our favorite tours and you couldn’t buy a bottle of the wine while we were there. They’re hard to find and they just happened to have one on the shelf in New Hampshire! She then packaged each of them individually into wine bags and hid them around the tree - strategically mingling them with all the other presents so I had no idea there was a case of wine waiting for me. What a lovely treasure, and what a fun way to re-live a number of wonderful memories! And yes, it did not escape our notice that we look a lot younger in these photos…

Homemade mince tarts - there were an even dozen, but one was sacrificed in the name of quality assurance before the photo could be taken. We’d like to wish everyone a lovely holiday season, regardless of what and how you choose to celebrate. It’s a pleasure to be connected to such a lovely and talented community!

The Christmas plum pudding came up from the cellar today for its final “feeding” before the holiday. It’s been squirreled away in a dark corner of the “overflow refrigerator” for exactly a month thus far to allow the flavors to meld. The term plum pudding is a bit of a misnomer, as they have nothing to do with plums (apparently the term was used generically for dried fruit, such as the raisins, currants, and dates that appear in this one), and they don’t really meet the definition of a “pudding” as typically used on this side of the Atlantic. I’ve included a couple of photos of last year’s pudding so you can see what it looks like when it’s been tipped out of its basin and adorned with a sprig of holly. I love it, but some might say a little bit goes a long way.

Perhaps the greatest challenge in making one of these puddings is securing the parchment paper onto the top of the basin before steaming it. And of course, remembering to retrieve it every couple of weeks to splash it with a bit of brandy (or, in this case Armagnac). Out of sight, out of mind as the saying goes.

We always seem to have a minimum of two Christmas trees here at Mossy Ledge Farm. There’s typically a very full one in the living room - it needs to be pretty substantial to accommodate our always-growing collection of ornaments. And then there’s a second tree which comes from the forest behind the house and which usually gets set up in the sunroom. Invariably, it might be described as “sparse and somewhat misshapen” and most people know exactly what we’re talking about when we refer to it as the Charlie Brown tree. And, just like Charlie Brown, there’s always a bit of a soft spot for this slightly awkward, but sweet and genuine bit of Christmas cheer.

Baby, it’s cold outside. I mean really. The mercury was hovering around 10° below zero (F, that’s -23°C) this morning when we got up. After Friday’s -6°F, that was enough to get me to pull out the past copies of my journals to see just how unusual this is. As it turns out, we’ve only recorded subzero temperatures here during the first half of December in three years out of the last twenty (the coldest of those was -5° on December fifteenth in 2017). So I guess if you’re feeling unusually inclined to hunker down near the fire - as the cats seem to be here - there’s probably a good reason for that.

I’ve got a great fondness for pies - of all sorts, but I think it’s been a couple of years since I’ve made these little beauties. Tourtière is traditional pork pie typically connected to the French Canadian heritage in these parts, and while it can be eaten at any time of the year, it’s most often associated with the holidays. As with any of these traditional dishes, individual recipes vary, but common themes include binding the meat with a bit of mashed potato and seasoning with cloves, sage, thyme, nutmeg and allspice. And - as with most pies - it’s pretty tasty at any hour of the day or night.

Want chilaquiles to taste like you’re in Mexico, but don’t necessarily want to get out the passport? Keep watching! 👀

When Jonathan Edgerton of said his wife came back from Mexico dreaming about chilaquiles, I was like… say no more! 🇲🇽🔥 I showed him how to make one of my favorite versions - shredded chicken, salsa verde, crisp tortilla chips, and all the flavor and garnishes that make this dish sing!

He’s about to score some major points at home… and maybe even claim the kitchen crown 👑😉.
