“I always felt, with Tom Girls, that it was a way of communicating with Tom [of Finland]. It was meant as both a tribute and a critique, a way of exchanging ideas. My favourite quote from Angela Carter is, ‘Pornography is art with a job to do’, and in fact, it may be doing more than one job: it may even be multi-tasking! All pornography is informed by ideology. I think the Tom Girls series makes that point very clearly – and so that whether or not one finds the drawings erotic or not depends on your politics.

What I find fascinating is how Touko constructed masculinity as a set of costumes and poses which could be put on and taken off. This was revolutionary, because men, maleness and masculinity expect to be taken very seriously in our society, (but) Tom of Finland demonstrates in his drawings that it’s something that can be played with. Lumberjacks, sailors, bikers, cops – it’s all dress-up butchness for kicks. What needed to be taken seriously, though, were the power dynamics going on in the drawings – most especially because we know that gay people are not immune to the lure of fascism. […] If the aesthetics of fascism involve the eroticisation of power itself, then we have to look at Tom’s drawings and understand that we need not accept submission to a uniform. That was part of my critique, and that’s what I tried to do with the Tom Girls.” - GB Jones, quote via.

"I like sex best when it’s fast and fun. Or slow and beautiful. Beautiful, of course can be fun too. And fun, beautiful. I like warm necks. And the smalls of backs. I’m not sure if that’s the right word: small. What I mean is the part of the back that goes in the most. Just before your bottom comes out. I like navels. I like under-arms. I don’t care for feet especially, or legs. I like faces. Eyes and lips and ears. I think that what I like most about sex is just touching. Skin is so alive. I like cold clean sheets. I like breasts and nipples. What I’m a sucker for most is a round full bottom. I really don’t like that word bottom. I think underwear is sexy." - Joe Brainard, except from "Sex" (1969) via, images via.

“When I was younger, I jumped into drawing as a distraction from feeling uncomfortable in my body and with my sexuality. Fortunately, as I got older, I turned a crucial corner, coming out as queer, moving to Toronto, and immersing myself in nightlife and creative communities. My work became an extension of myself, instead of an escape. Over the past decade, I've taken great joy in pushing my fluid, surreal visual aesthetic and exploring ideas surrounding queer culture, gender expression, and urban upheaval. As part of my practice, I've created comics, murals, nightlife flyers, harm reduction campaigns, and music videos." -

“CI: Your work says so much about intimacy. Not just emotional intimacy, but physical intimacy that is sexual but not necessarily always about sex itself. That is such a complicated state of being to try and visually unpack.

LY: Yes, because it’s neither here nor there, you know? It’s actually one of the great states. One of the great places to be. “
