What a difference a spout makes! These three pots are prototypes for a new shape of body. We experimented with three different style spouts, and although the body, lid and handle are the same, the choice of spout makes a big difference to the overall feel of the pot.

Do you have any preferences?

Some new pots. We liked this shape a lot - inspired by an antique pot owned by an acquaintance of ours, we decided to make a modern version with high quality clays.

These were made originally at the same size, in pure DiCaoQing and Xiao Mei Yao Zhuni clays. We hadn't expected such a difference in size after firing though - the zhuni shrunk to 120ml while the dicaoqing pot is 150ml. We had expected zhuni to shrink a bit, but hadn't quite expected it to be so much.

We're really happy with how they've both turned out - the strong and functional shape with quick pour makes them a joy to use for tea.

Phew!!! That was a lot of work! Two pretty solid months in fact, driving around the mountains, living in villages, hiking and perilous motorbike rides through remote forest tracks, drinking far too much tea, taking care of relationships, making financial and reputational decisions, searching for handmade paper, selecting and buying material, sewing the wrappers, pressing the cakes, photographing, writing tasting notes and listing online.

It's always an exhausting time, but so much fun too!

Our new cakes are finally online. We decided to focus on a few high end Yiwu & Guafengzhai areas this year, along with a smattering of Bulang and some daily drinkers from further north. We hope you enjoy them.

Anyone for Gaogan? We purchased a few kg of maocha from these tall pole trees growing in the protected forest (Guoyoulin) in YaoQu, an area just south of Yiwu.

Our cakes are just finishing being pressed at the moment and we should be ready to release all our spring productions in a few days focussing on making some small quantity, high end productions to highlight the beauty of Yiwu’s forest environment and micro-region ancient trees

Organising offcuts. We like to keep our wrappers simple for our puerh cakes. These offcuts came back from the tailor who sews strips of material to our handmade paper to form our puerh wrappers.

Our spring teas are pressed and the wrappers will be sent down to the pressing factory on Monday to begin wrapping the cakes and putting them into tongs. Hopefully the fresh cakes will be ready to put on the website in another week or two.

“Beyond the Clouds” - the name we gave to a tea garden in Ai Lao mountains. At over 2000m this place is full of lovely wild mountain food, lovely uncomplicated people and lovely tea.

We work on a long term basis with this family, renting a tea garden together buying all their tea, only picking spring tea and using leaves from the forest to fertilise. No agrochemicals are used at all and the teas are made as simply as possible to allow the natural beauty to come through. Through this type of cooperation we can provide a stable income for the family each year and also give them confidence to make tea according to our requirements. It works well for both parties.

In previous years we’ve been making mostly hongcha and raw puerh from here. This year we decided to make a test batch of white tea too.

Since it’s quite a drive from Xishuangbanna where we source most of our other teas, we didn’t make it to here until today. The unfertilised trees are sprouting later than the other trees around the village and they’re still picking the first flush.

The fresh teas are tasting lovely.
These are a few of the trees that last year’s Wuliang Selected Trees cake was made from. These are just a few but they’re all of a similar size.

These kinds of trees are still relatively cheap in further north regions. If in Xishuangbanna they’d cost a fortune and people would be queuing up for them. Luckily for us, this village is pretty much unknown for tea buyers and the tea is still cheap and a great choice for those looking for Gushu tea without a sky high price tag.

… and some piglets to make your day better!

Hei Shui Liang Zi - a lesser known tea garden near Guafengzhai that has become more promoted in recent years.

There aren’t a lot of ancient trees here, it’s mostly known for the small trees that have been planted in the forest around 2007-2010. These are plentiful, and the overwhelming majority of the tea that’s possible for most people to be able to try from here. The ancient trees are nice though and the environment is immaculate - deep in the forest.

We selected a few of the bigger ancient trees in the garden and collected the fresh leaves to fry back in the village. A lot of work, just a little tea, but nice to include this in our selection this Spring.

I headed a few days ago to check out Guafengzhai’s Leng Shui He tea garden. This small area has grown in popularity (and price) in recent years. We made a little tea from here in 2016 for our personal collection - it was never enough to sell, but hadn’t visited the garden.

Since I was staying in Guafengzhai for an extended period this spring, I wanted to visit all the gardens and deepen my understanding of the forest gardens surrounding Guafengzhai.

This was the most arduous of all the tea gardens I’ve visited in the past 17 years that we’ve been making puerh. It’s a tough hour long motorbike ride along muddy and tight paths cut into the jungle often with steep drops to the side. Without the slightest hyperbole, I can say that more than a few times on the journey I had the thought that my life could very easily end that day. When the path gets too tight for even a motorbike, there’s another half hour trek through the jungle before coming on a beautiful flat area with a small river (Leng Shui He means Cold Water Stream) running through it. Although no-one knows for sure, it’s thought that there were maybe a couple of families living here at some point in the distant past and that they planted the tea garden in the forest. It’s easy to see why people would want to live there - a good source of fresh and pure water with the flat area of land nestled amongst surrounding hills and lush forest - it would make a lovely place to live.

The ancient tea garden itself is small, but the ancient trees are lovely - growing to huge sizes and flushing well in this fertile forest environment. In more recent years villagers from Guafenzhai have planted smaller trees in the surrounding forest, but it’s the ancient trees here that make the tea from here so special.

Fetching some fresh leaves from Guafengzhai’s ChaPing tea area.

The biggest trees in the gardens are sprouting these days and we thought it would be good to visit the garden and carry some fresh leaves down the mountain. ChaPing has several gardens, this one belongs to a family we’ve known for about a decade now, but since we’d been mostly focusing on Chawangshu each year, we’d never visited or bought any of their tea.

After visiting their garden I have a whole new appreciation for this area - it’s really beautiful! Unspoilt, in the middle of the protected forest - a few km hike up breathtaking mountain stream, crossing over again and again on bamboo poles and logs across the river.

The tea garden itself is lovely - full of huge trees with almost no small trees. The small trees had already sprouted a week or so ago, and it was just the bigger ones that had held out until now.

We sat for a while, explored a bit and brought the fresh leaves down the mountain to process ouselves. Making good tea isn’t easy, but the effort makes it all the more worthwhile.
