One of our favourite photos taken a few years ago by.
An A-frame stood quiet in a hush-filled freeze.
Its steep wooden roof wore a blanket of snow,
While warm golden light cast a soft, gentle glow.
The fire crackled low beneath beams rising high,
Where windows reached upward, pointing into the sky.
Mugs of hot cocoa steamed close at hand,
Boots dried by the hearth, gloves piled in a pile of wool and plaid.
Stockings were hung on the beam with great care,
In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.
The children lay dreaming in loft beds above,
Rocked gently to sleep by the creak of the wood.
Outside, the forest stood frozen and still,
Not a creature was stirring, not even the hill.
When up on the roof came a soft muffled sound—
Snow sliding slowly as hooves touched down.
I looked toward the peak where the chimney stood tall,
And down came old Santa—laugh, boots, sack and all.
His coat brushed the walls of the narrow stairway,
As he smiled at the space where the firelight played.
He filled all the stockings, paused under the tree,
Admiring the A-frame and its quiet beauty.
Then up through the chimney he rose out of sight,
Leaving warmth, wonder, and joy for the night.
And I heard him call out as his sleigh took to flight,
“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”
