This week’s guest is Liz Lidgett, gallerist, art advisor, author of the soon-to-be-released Art for Everyone, and the woman behind one of the most joyful, values-driven galleries I’ve come across.
From growing up visiting a free museum in Iowa, to studying Art History in LA, before returning home and setting up a gallery that now ships work around the world, Liz has built her business rooted in accessibility, kindness, and a refusal to take part in the snootiness that so often puts people off the art world.
In our lively chat we talked about:
- Why being based in an “overlooked” Midwestern city gave her the freedom to play and experiment with her gallery
- Opening the gallery in 2019… then surviving and growing through lockdown
- Building a values-led gallery: 75 artists, 50% women, “no jerks” policy
- How Instagram helped her turn a local space into a business that ships to all 50 US states and beyond
- Her upcoming book Art for Everyone — and why she wrote it
- What galleries still offer artists in a world of direct sales
- Running a creative business with joy at the centre
I hope you enjoy episode 46!
Check out and for more from Liz.

Perhaps you’re new to buying art, and looking for something at a more affordable price point, or maybe you want to gift a loved one to remind them of time spent in Cornwall, or you’re simply looking for something to fit in a cosy nook in your home.
The first is ‘A Blustery Day’ and the second is ‘A Joyful Day’. Both are A4 size works on paper, and capture Cornwall’s natural beauty in its various moods and aspects.
Works on paper are often a chance for an artist to work in a more immediate way, testing a new idea or simply enjoying immersion and flow state.
For Aisleigh, art is a visceral experience that embraces the messiness of experimentation and freedom of hands-on expression.
She has cultivated her own distinctive style which incorporates elements of abstraction while still remaining rooted in place.
She says, “I know I push the boundaries a little but everything in my work comes from somewhere... I love to enhance the bits that stand out to me, the things that make a place. I bring in lines that are play from both clouds and industrial shapes...”
‘The Bigger Picture’ continues online and in the gallery by appointment until 28th February — drop me a line if you’d like to plan your visit 💌

We’re back next week — but in the meantime, here are four brilliant stories from the archive.
Each of these women came to their creative career from somewhere completely different. No straight lines. No perfect timelines. Just instinct, persistence, and the courage to think ‘I can do this’.
Nicola Mosley — travelled the world supporting her family, and then found time for herself and painting in Texas.
Carin Lindberg — moved countries and careers before finding her professional passion in jewellery.
Deborah Harwood — left the glamour of the West End theatre world to move to rural West Sussex and discovered her true creativity in clay.
Judy McKenzie — rediscovered her artistic identity after a previous career and finally claimed space for creativity.
If you’re navigating a professional pivot, a new chapter, or asking yourself a quiet “what if…?”, these are stories to listen to.
And there are lots more… tell me in the comments, which episodes have you loved?

Anthea Bowen creates striking hand built pots inspired by her the Cornish landscape. She says, “I feel at home in nature and ideas for new pieces are conceived during walks along the Cornwall coastline close to my studio. I like to create calming, contemporary ceramics which reflect this rugged coastal environment.”
The large vessel pictured is Kostrel: The Dappling Woodland. Kostrel is the Cornish word for flask. The slip decoration colourway was inspired by a walk through a beautiful buttercup meadow in spring. The vessel on the left is from Anthea’s PenDu black clay collection, named from the Cornish words ‘Pen’, meaning headland, and ‘Du’ meaning black.
Next is Benjamin Lintell’s ‘Primavera’ Murano glass platter vessel. Back in October, I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Venice to visit Benjamin at Wave Studio on Murano shortly after he celebrated his 30th birthday. The platter is from his Adriatic series, which captures the unique qualities of Murano that surround him in the glass he makes day to day in the furnace, and in the magical waters of the Venetian lagoon.
Finally, no Byre Gallery exhibition is complete without Lucy Burley’s bottles. The first time Lucy exhibited with me, one client described the private view as ‘bottle mania’. She wasn’t referring to the amount of wine consumed that evening, but the popularity of a collection of Lucy’s ceramic bottles, which had resulted in a flurry of red stickers. Her vessels are thrown on the wheel using white earthenware clay, and she has developed a semi-matt earthenware glaze, smooth to the touch, to which she adds oxides and stains to obtain a wide spectrum of colours.

To Aisleigh, art is a visceral experience that embraces the messiness of experimentation and freedom of hands-on expression. She finds nature and painting equally nurturing, but together, they become her passion. When outdoors, she absorbs and reflects on her surroundings, basking in the stillness, and the sense of excitement and hope she feels, which she translates into her paintings.
Striving to celebrate the beauty of Cornwall, Aisleigh sees each painting as a tribute to the beauty surrounding us — a reminder to cherish and protect these precious landscapes.
As a chocolatier in her previous career, techniques such as layering, texture application, splattering, scraping, and colour play all feed into her art practice today.
Join us in the gallery today to see Aisleigh’s work — it’s even more breathtaking in person — among other sizeable delights from some of our gallery favourites in ‘The Bigger Picture’. We are open until 4pm ❄️
Don’t forget, we’ll be open by appointment throughout ‘betwixtmas’ and early January. Pop in when you see the gallery OPEN sign, or get in touch to arrange a time to suit you 💌

Ever wanted to eavesdrop on gallery owners in conversation? Now is your chance! In the Christmas Special of An Art to It, I’m joined by two fellow gallerists: Sharon Harvey ( and ) and Sara McKee.
Together we unwrap what 2025 has really been like for independent galleries: the tough months, the surprising highs, the “Dunkirk Spirit” of a Private View in a rainstorm and flood, and why layering income streams and experiences has become essential.
We also answer questions posed by artists and makers on:
📝 How galleries choose new artists
🧭 Whether being a “Northern” artist limits your gallery chances
💌 Following up when a gallery goes quiet
💰 The reality of pricing for galleries vs. art fairs
🌻 Whether galleries worry about “missing the next Van Gogh”…
It’s a cosy, honest, very real conversation about art, money, risk, resilience — and why your relationship with a gallery matters as much as your work.
Thank you again to everyone who has taken part in An Art to It this year, everyone who has listened — and kept listening — and to the lovely Jake Waring, who adds his sparkle of magic and makes sure it can actually be listened to. And my socials angel Immy who creates all the lovely imagery!
We will be back in mid January with a new series, I hope you can join us then!
Now it really is time for the mulled wine🍷

Lucy's elegant and distinctive style has won her many admirers. Her vessels, both decorative and functional, are thrown on the wheel using white earthenware clay, and she has developed a semi-matt earthenware glaze, smooth to the touch, to which she adds oxides and stains to obtain a wide spectrum of colours.
In this case, she has opted for understated ivory — achieving the same quiet harmony of form and colour that characterises her work.
Her bottles and vessels look wonderful on their own, or as part of a collection. The interior glaze is watertight.
Finalising your Christmas shopping? Purchases can be collected or delivered locally until 23rd December.
