Pinch me! I’m a Lonely Planet Guidebook Author! That’s MY name on the new edition of the Guide to Dubai & Abu Dhabi. While the feeling of seeing my work in print never gets old, this one is extra special because:

13 years ago when I started traveling solo, I was that girl with a backpack and a Lonely Planet, who could not be stopped from seeing the world.

I had this superstition that if I bought the LP Guide to a certain country, it was where I’d be going next and all things would align to make that happen. It worked every single time.

Even today, I believe much of what Lonely Planet taught me: that the world is a safe, wonderful place if you keep an open mind, people are welcoming and willing to share their world with you if you just ask, all places are more than just one thing (so seek out fresh perspectives), spontaneity is rewarding, and there is more than one right way to travel the world.

In this guide I’ve shared so many reasons to fall in love with Abu Dhabi and some incredible day trips that you can take from Dubai and Abu Dhabi to see a completely different side of the UAE, from the captivating dunes of Liwa to the mountains of Hatta and the quiet coast of Khor Fakkan.

I hope you’ll read it and enjoy my recommendations as your own trusted friend in the UAE, a place I love not only because it’s always been home, but one I appreciate even more every time I travel.

I’m so grateful to local voices Tanya Naveed and Ebrahim Alharbi for sharing their Abu Dhabi with me. Congratulations also to my co-authors

The link to both the print and ebook versions are in my bio.

Unpopular Opinion: As travel creators we need to think twice about using words such as “first”, “only”, and “wilderness” when describing ourselves in new and foreign places. Nothing wrong with these words but context is so important.

Look, I get the appeal of saying “I was the only X (how you choose to refer to yourself) in the Y (something that ultimately means unexplored/undiscovered) of Z (country/culture)” it’s such an ego boost, isn’t it? It makes us look adventurous, intrepid, sexy, it makes us feel like we ARE actually more than we ever thought we could be. And our friends agree, “so proud of you” they cheer us on as we venture into these “untrodden, unexplored lands”. But are they really? Or is that a narrative that has been repeated over and over by others who came before us?

It’s 2022, and these tired narratives that erase people and cultures need to be thrown out of the window.
When we talk of places and cultures as “remote”, “wild” and/or “unexplored” we might imply that they weren’t or aren’t cultured or connected with the rest of the world.
We imply that they existed in a bubble of ignorance.
We deny the wealth of their relationships with other cultures.

When we call places “the wilderness” or “the wild” just because they don’t look like our cities and towns, we might be disregarding the existence and cultures of the indigenous people of those lands who might have lived there, maybe nomadically, for thousands of years.

When we portray places as undiscovered and uninhabited, whether by ourselves or the western world as a whole, we do not acknowledge their existence before we found them.

This needs to stop.

I was guilty of this too, speaking the lingo of what I thought travel writing was. Now I know better and I am still learning.

I promise that we all have better, deeper stories than this one. Let’s tell those instead.

What does it say when we highlight places as “One of the CHEAPEST countries you can travel to” or “Travel here because it’s super CHEAP”?

Listen, it took me a decade to understand this, but we need to do better than this.

Describing countries like this is lazy, reductive and more often than not, tone-deaf. It centers the visitor, not the country, not the locals. That model of tourism harms places and people, and cannot be a force for good.

It’s subjective you know, how expensive or cheap it is to travel to a particular country. It depends on where you’re from, where you make and spend your money. What’s cheap for you might be expensive for someone else. So, be grateful for your privilege, then check it.

It’s great (but is it, really?) that you can afford to travel someplace, spend less and get more. Good for you.

But promoting places by using clickbaity headlines that center the word Cheap, is taking away from everything else in that place - culture, nature, heritage, art, food, history, progress- things that all countries have fought for and are proud of- and shifts focus to that one buzzword ‘Cheap’.

A better way, IMO, to say is “there are plenty of things to do on a budget” or “the country is suitable for budget travel”.

And tourists might not realize it, but this “let’s go where it’s cheap” mindset can often be colonial and exploitative.

Don’t go somewhere because it’s cheap - you can travel on a budget nearly everywhere you go, even in Scandinavia. Take a longer flight, get an apartment instead of a hotel, cook your own meals.

Go for the stories that locals would like to tell you that media and influencers might not. I doubt they would begin with, “And come to our country because it’s so cheap.”
