During our event last week we asked the question “What would a world centred on Black joy look and feel like?” 💭🖤✨

Kleaver invited us to reflect, to celebrate, and to reimagine joy as something intentional, transformative, and collaborative.

Together, Kleaver guided us to create joy themed poems and collages that centred on what Black joy means to us.

We encourage you all to reflect on what brings you joy 🙏🏾

Ten yeara ago today, I posted this picture of my mom. It was only a couple of weeks into what would become The Black Joy Project. Remembering her beautiful smile is a huge part of what inspired this Spirit-led impulse to make more room for joy. She is a person who has had many challenges along her path and yet still has chosen joy so many times. Her smile is a reminder that joy can always exist at the same time as what causes pain. That year our small family suddenly lost my Uncle Ali, her little brother Ali. And yet she, we, had moments of joy.

Looking back now, the gratitude is even greater for a smile that continues to glow across time.

Happy 10 years to answering the call to make more space for joy and using it as a tool to face all that attempts to steal it from us.

It is with heavy hearts that we at The Black Joy Project share our condolences for the recent loss of our friend and comrade Joyce Prado. We had the honor and privilege to be in conversation with her this past November as part of ‘s #KinFest. Joyce was and will always be a voice of a people and a generation. We are thankful for her generosity and deep commitment to Black communities within and far beyond Brazil. We are thankful for the incredible legacy she has left us. You will be missed something serious Joyce, but never forgotten. May your spirit continue its journey✨🕊️ Please watch the rest of this convo, it was an amazing one that speaks to the importance of building solidarities across Black communities in the world. 🔗 is you know where. #blackjoyiseverywhere #theblackjoyproject

Today is the day mi gente! THANK YOU is all we can say! Thank you to the ancestors and all that came before us and made the choices they made and did the things they did so that we had a source of strength—of joy—to tap into in our times of existence. It truly takes a squad to make a book happen, thank you to the team, with a special shout out to who has been more than an editor in this process, a true champion of this book. Thank you to who did a breathtaking design of the inside of this book after only one initial conversation. The love is felt. Thank you to the 50+ artists who said yes to being a part of this project and trusting that your work will be honored as it should🫶🏽✨ This is our newest contribution to this thing we know as Black joy. A force that can’t ever be taken away because it was never given in the first place. May each person that experiences this be moved to not only create more joy in the world, but allow that to be a pathway to healing so that we can address all that stands in the ways of our joys✨🖤✨ #TheBlackJoyProject #PubDay #BlackJoyIsEverywhere
One of the most incredible and unforeseen blessings of this book making process has been the opportunity to not just bring in BEAUTIFUL art to the pages but also (and maybe more importantly) to connect with beautiful ARTISTS who are up to inspiring things in the world both through their art and the various other parts of their lives. It has been intentional that each and every person here is a part of this book. It is intentional that there is a range in age, experience and geographic location. Literally from 20-somethings to 70-somethings and from Melbourne to Milwaukee. We were supposed to come together in this way for reasons that are still being revealed. THANK YOU will never be enough to express the gratitude for each of them saying YES. Get into all this talent! (see comments for their (@)s cuz IG has a tag limit) This is a celebration (one of many) for the artist’s role in changing the world 🥳✨🫶🏽 AND thank you to the friends + fam of TBJP for sharing photos from your personal collections!
