Post idea inspired by
Anime: In the Clear Moonlit Dusk, Tamon’s B-Side, A Sign of Affection, The Invisible Man & His Soon To Be Wife, A Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity
EDIT: Brenda Vaughn’s song is on Eden of the East, whoops!
Finally going back further than the 2000s! Huge thank you to everyone who recommended black musicians and the series they worked on, I learned about so many collaborations I never heard of before! If you have any more suggestions let me know, I want to make more of these. It’s so empowering to see how black culture has had an impact on anime and vice versa. We make waves around the world 🌊✊🏾
Anime: Gundam ), Gatchaman (1994), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Metropolis (2001), Samurai Champloo (2004), Afro Samurai (2007), Eden of the East (2009), Cannon Buster (2019), Yasuke (2021)
Musicians: Jacob Wheeler, Maurice White (Earth, Wind, and Fire), Tulivu-Donna Cumberbatch, Ray Charles, Fat Jon, RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), Brenda Vaughn,,, Mansa Imani,,,
Part 2 here:
How many did you know? The history of black music in anime may seem brief but it has had more of an impact on anime than gets talked about. Japanese bands have referenced being inspired by black music and characters and dances in anime are often inspired by black music as well (a topic for another post). Not to mention the music artists who are also inspired by anime!
Anime: Bleach, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Carole & Tuesday, The Great Pretender, Lazarus, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe
Music artists: Hazel Fernandez, Jodeci, Nai.Brxx, Thundercat, Madison McFerrin, Denzel Curry, The Platters, Kamari Washington, SZA
These women each have unique ways of expressing their love for animanga. They inspire and motivate me to keep talking about what I love!
This is by no means an extensive list, I hope to shout out more in the future.

Anime:
Wolf Children, Buddy Daddies, Kakushigoto, Tokyo Godfathers, Kotaro Lives Alone
Fostering joy and healing in small ways, like watching anime, can help prepare us for the battles ahead. So rest up, be cozy and do what you can to change the world. Joy is resistance too.
The Summer Hikaru Died has been in a chokehold. The anime added so many incredible visuals to add to the dread and horror of the story but the manga has a subtle style that chills me to the core.

I’m grateful to Dream Con for the opportunity to attend and cover their convention this year! I’m even more grateful for the incredible people I was able to talk to and meet both in the halls of the Con and at my Healing With Cozy anime panel!
I believe Dream Con is an important place for black fandom in the US. And I do hope they keep acceptance and inclusion at the forefront when it comes to future cons and the audience they cultivate.
Blog post with more thoughts on the event and my time there coming soon!
