Better late than never! A late summer raft trip down the Yellowstone River— seven kids, three dogs and six adults. It was our first day on the river and our first overnight in a tent. No tears were shed and a whole lot of fun was had! ☀️ 🏔️ 🛶

I spent decades lifting in cushioned running shoes and almost every session ended with me kicking them off to train barefoot. Why? The thick cushion and raised heel threw off my balance especially during heavy lifts.

I was on the hunt for an alternative and came across. I’ve been wearing their ADAPT GRAPHENE XT for a month now and I LOVE them. 🙌 With a wide toe-box for stability and zero-drop sole for natural alignment, it feels like training barefoot but with added protection. Plus, working out barefoot in a gym is kind of gross 🤢.

The graphene material is a one-atom-thick layer of carbon arranged in the honeycomb pattern. It’s the strongest material ever discovered—200x stronger than steel— yet incredibly thin, light, and flexible. I feel like these will hold up to some pretty tough workouts and last forever. 💪🏼

Never too early to teach him the value of taking care of what you love—especially when it comes to bikes. 😄

And yes, it’s true… a clean bike does ride faster. Someone once told me: “A clean, well-tuned bike is the mark of a dedicated cyclist.” 🙌🏼

(Also—before anyone gets worked up that we “make” our three-year-old clean his bike… this was totally his idea after watching mom and dad wash ours. Just modeling what he sees. 💚)

Say yes to something every once in a while that scares the shit out of you and that you can look back at and be so damn proud.

This past week I competed in the - a six day mountain bike stage race in Breckenridge, CO. It was the biggest physical (and arguably, mental) challenge I’ve accomplished in my life. But it wasn’t the six days of racing that was the hardest part, although that was freaking hard. It was the entire journey leading up to the big event.

I registered for the race in 2019. Shortly after I ruptured my Achilles tendon and had to defer. Covid sidelined everyone in 2020. In 2021 I deferred yet again after an unfortunate miscarriage. We got pregnant again and had Silas in 2022. The demands of motherhood and running a business pushed me close to another deferral, but after some friendly peer pressure, I said yes and committed to racing the Breck Epic. I knew this wasn’t a ‘get off the couch and compete’ kind of event. It would take work and a lot of it.

I decided to hire a long time friend and total badass, to help me put a training program in place. On our first call, Justin asked me what my goal was for the race. I told him I wanted to feel good and finish. Five minutes later I texted him and I said, “Who am I kidding? I want to win.”

Over the next four months I executed Justin’s plan and invested 15-20 hours a week into training, rarely missing a workout. It was a balancing act of motherhood, running a business, being a wife, friend and daughter and training. I said no to social engagements and sacrificed weekends away from my family so that I could get in 4-5 hour rides. I remember flying home from a trip and getting in late. I knew I had to get in a workout so I went downstairs and hammered out a ride before bed. It was the last thing I wanted to do, but I did it anyway. Discipline will always trump motivation. Throughout the process I would remind myself that if it were easy, everyone would be doing it and that investing in the hard work will almost always lead to something incredible in the end. Stick with it and stay the course. Such a metaphor for so much in life.

// DREAMS // Several years ago I reversed engineered my life. I started with the end goal in mind and figured out how I could live that life. I wanted to be the author of my own story and take the front seat in how my days, weeks and months would look. I wanted to ride my bike a lot, work from (and live) anywhere in the world (yay, Montana), spend as much time as I desire with the people I love who live both near and far. I wanted work that was meaningful and got me out of bed in the morning. I wanted to workout for hours in the morning if that’s what I wanted, slowly sip morning coffee on the patio, concoct creative at-home meals instead of packing a lunch, do yoga in the middle of the day, go for walks, not sit in traffic or have the stress of deadlines, quotas, conferences and meetings. I didn’t want a boss (ever again) who told me I was too curious and asked too many questions. Yes, that happened.

What is often misinterpreted from the facade of social media is all of the hard work, sacrifice and discipline it took (and continues to take) to live out this dream. It’s not easy. If it were easy, everyone would be doing it. But I don’t want to live for easy. It’s the struggle that makes the journey so beautiful. And knowing that all of the hard work is so incredibly worth it when you get there. Somewhere along the way (maybe when I wanted to throw in the towel), I fully accepted that am the ONLY person responsible for living out or giving up on my dreams. Full stop.

So to summarize, I don’t just ride my bike, travel and post stories on Instagram as some might suspect. The work I do is flexible but it’s certainly not optional. I have an at-home office that actually gets used. I also have a laptop and wifi. And I still choose to get up at 5:00AM most mornings...not because I have to, because I want to.

One year ago today, I ruptured my Achilles tendon. It was devastating. You all showered me with words of encouragement telling me that I would get through it and would come out stronger. With a great team of doctors, physical therapists, trainers and all of you, my recovery went so incredible smoothly and I’m back doing all the things I love at the same level I was prior to my injury.

This year didn’t start out much better. On Sunday I was back in the emergency room with shortness of breath. Having had two episodes of massive DVTs/PEs, I know when something is off with my body. I suspected another pulmonary embolism but remained hopeful until the CT scan confirmed the diagnosis. It was in fact a pulmonary embolism.

Surgeons can repair a ruptured Achilles tendon. It’s fixable. My susceptibility to blood clotting is genetic. It’s not something I can repair. Four months ago, with my doctor’s permission, I chose to go off my blood thinners thinking that it was something I could control. Well, the hard truth is that I’m not driving this ship. Given my history of blood clots and PEs, two provoked and one spontaneous (likely from a lot of travel), I will have to be on blood thinners for the rest of my life. That’s a hard pill to swallow....but so is the alternative.

The most important lesson I’ve learned through all of this is that you can train the body, put in the hours and be the best athlete you can possibly be, but if you don’t train the mind, you’ll never make it and I truly believe that. I am still working through the emotions of this harsh reality, but I know for certain this will not hold me back. Like anything else in my life, I will persevere and come out stronger. It’s yet another roadblock. Another challenge thrown in my path pushing me to become a stronger person. Perspective is everything. 🙏🏼❤️
