Known to Shanghainese as 灶披间 Zaopijian, public kitchens are a distinct feature of apartments in Shanghai in the last century.
With the improvement of housing conditions, every family began to pay attention to privacy, thus public places such as Zaopijian gradually disappeared, which can only be found in a few protected buildings nowadays.
The first I entered a Zaopijian in one protected building, such image popped into my mind: one afternoon in the 1980s, the residents of the alley came back home one after another, and they gathered in the kitchen to prepare the supper. The sound of bowls and the smell of dishes mixed with adults’ chatting and kids’ laughter. What an amazing scene, ordinary but full of liveliness!

“As an outsider I am always impressed by simple behaviors that usually do not occur in my native country. One of the first situations that caught my attention when I moved to Shanghai was the one of people sleeping or napping everywhere. So, this cover for The Shanghairen is a tribute to the migrant workers that head to the big city where there are factory jobs, thousands of construction sites and large public works projects. Arriving by bus and by train, with the possessions
crammed into red or blue plaid nylon sacks. In the cities they live in shanty towns, dormitories or public spaces--or sometimes right on the sidewalk.”
Sebastian Correa is a Chilean architect, photographer and illustrator based in Shanghai since 2014, is main motivation is the city: His works are an attempt to reveal everyday scenes of Shanghai: a neighborhood in a city that does not stop multiplying and demolishing; hopeful parents and grandparents in the marriage market; napping kuaidi drivers, street stylists, and baozi-makers. The figures approximate the portrait and encourage an urban feeling – the spirit of a city that disappears and remains, connecting and detaching strangers and friends, locals, and newcomers.
Trajan Jia says: “I came to Shanghai for the first time when I was 23 years old. Before that, my knowledge of Shanghai began with brands and patterns, such as the wrapper of the “White Rabbit” toffee I loved, the outline of the “Shanghai 555” clock on our table, and the pattern of mum's “Butterfly” sewing machine. Proust used sounds to describe his impression of the streets of Paris; patterns and symbols are the keys that unlock my memories of Shanghai.
What I have drawn is not a real place in the Yuyuan Garden; rather the memory of the only way I used to travel to work. It is basically a miniature of the city: unique traditional characteristics are captured brick by brick, yet it actually comprises a short hundred years of glory. I perceive a very outdated and noisy trade market and glimpses of many hidden cultural eras and fashionable crossovers. People who pass through here, office workers, tourists, and residents will be lost in the torrent of architecture. They move through a vibrant matrix of cultural symbols, old traditional signs, characteristically local patterns, and logos of international luxury goods. As they walk around they gradually forget this city, brick by brick, just as a tailor forgets fragments of colourful cloth that drop to the floor after cutting “

Light from a street arcade leak onto the darkened streets. Inside the arcade is a claw machine. Within it are vintage items from my childhood memory: White Rabbit candy, a toy bus and chocolate powder. A father and son stand together by the machine, peering in with hopes to win gems from 1980s Shanghai. There are three dichotomies in this illustration: traditional Shanghainese-style houses vs modern skyscrapers, old food/toys vs a trendy claw machine and a father born in the 1980s vs a son born in the 2000s. These represent the unique ways in which Shanghai harmoniously combines the old and new throughout the city.

🌞 Enjoy spring time in Fuxing Park 🌈🪁🌱🕊️🎺

Fuxing Park is one of the best places to spend summertime in Shanghai. Despite how beautiful it is, I am very much attracted by all kinds of people who hang around - dancers, card players, mahjong enthusiasts, and tai chi solo. Doesn’t matter if they are tourists or local citizens, by simply enjoying the chillness and being present there, they are the fine sum-up of variety and vitality to Shanghai.
