*cost of goods
*reasonable access to goods (not buying from a small brand because they donât offer 2-day shipping is uncalled for đ€Ș)
*perceived value (i.e. why would I buy the original when I can buy the dupe? said while carrying a $3,000 bag bought by the links to the dupe)
*lack of universal size options
*search engine manipulation (fast fashion spends a lot of money buying up key words related to sustainability)
*changing body (which makes purchasing digitally difficult)

I am laying out the barriers because I have a sneaking feeling that a new(ish) economy is on the way and we need solutions. Solutions that I am positive will be found through building awareness and taking action/growing in every way we possibly can.
This type of change is exciting.
Itâs fresh.

âŠand how brands rely on incentivizing earned media from unpaid influencers to see ROI.
If you are not familiar with the Tarte brand trip, no need to look it up. Itâs simply another lavish, over the top brand trip that unfortunately wasnât left back in 2019 đ«
This isnât about the influencers on the trip or even the brand itself. Itâs about an ideology. A way of existing that needs to shift. We currently live in an economy of consumption (at least we do in the US) and that consumption isnât driven by inherent value, innovation or the betterment of society. Itâs driven by oneâs ability to sell products to elevate THEIR lifestyle, not yours. (See Reel Titled: Fast Influencing & Digital MLMs)
We are perpetuating yet another system that funnels funds directly to the top of a pyramid from its foundation; which is where the customer/influencer archetype exists. This system blocks change. It blocks innovation. It funnels attention away from up & coming brands. It favors entities with the most access to capital and connections.
And it keeps you from accessing brands/creators that truly have your best interest at heart. It doesnât have to be this way. Thankfully this type of behavior is a no-go in many spaces, they just arenât as prevalent and slightly difficult to find. Hopefully there will be a solution soon đ #sustythoughts #slowfashionstyle #slowliving #oootd #trippinwithtarte
Repetition is in.
Now itâs time to show off our of our closet staples⊠over and over and over and over again. đ #shopyourcloset #repetitiondujour #oootd #rewearthat #trendforecasting
This DOES NOT apply to small, emerging businesses/brands. Meaning that we are discussing gift marketing at scale and how it plays directly into moving as many people as possible (including influencers/creators) into a cycle of overconsumption while continuing to hoard profits.
For context, the og vid is a social media manager sharing advice on how to turn a gifting relationship into a paid opportunity. The jist of their advice was; âplay it cool, but not too coolâ. Which is fine for the current state of things, but it leaves out the part where MOST gifting programs require you to commit (via contract) to post AND that while the carrot of a paid partnership is left dangling, most will never get there.
Not to mention this type of influencing only leads to companionship in consumption.
Most at-scale gifting programs, typically run by platforms like Upfluence & Fohr (aka âcreator aggregatorsâ) require signing away commercial rights (where most value lies in content creation) in exchange for a âgiftâ. These entities act as the âmiddle manâ and in the process siphon away most of the brandâs budget for their internal teams.
Now donât get me wrong. This is THE system at-large, but when we recognize that most fast fashion brands are inflating numbers through incentivizing media mentions in this way, you really start to question if these brands are adding any value beyond the ability to elicit FOMO on social media. đ€·đŒââïž #fomomarketing #fastfashiondetox #oootd #rewearthat #revolve
Historically, brand safety is a set of measures that aim to protect the image and reputation of brands from the negative or damaging influence of questionable or inappropriate content when advertising online. For example, if you are a childrenâs brand advertising on Facebook, you might be upset if your advertisement is running adjacent to a post touting dangerous conspiracy theories lest the audience attach your brand to that idea. Weâve seen this happen specifically in the influencer world as well (ex: Danielle Bernsteinâs namesake line being dropped from Macyâs amidst multiple scandals and allegations of stealing designs), but only in terms of influencerâs impacting brands, not the other way around.
BUT now that influencers and content creators are also considered âbrandsâ they should take the reputation of the corporations/companies they decide to work with into account. Especially as connections to fast fashion brands in particular continue to come under fire. We have BARELY scratched the surface of the damage these companies have done. And their success can largely be attributed to the attention they receive from celebrities and mega-influencers which trickles down and results in a massive amount of âearned mediaâ (earned media is publicity or exposure gained from methods other than paid advertising). As an example, Revolve does not pay their influencers, but their entire marketing strategy was built on manufacturing discontent through exclusivity resulting in a BARRAGE of earned media from influencers just wanting to be recognized or reposted by the brand. Simply because Revolve was paying people like Kendall Jenner to wear their clothing. They also cultivated an air of luxury through exclusive events like #revolvearoundtheworld that prompted up and coming influencers to wear their clothing, tag their brand in the hopes of being discovered by the brand. Which is fine, until the word starts to get out that the two founders are men and continue to ignore the atrocities within their supply chain because it makes them billionaires.
Iâve run out of room. TLDR; keep your brand safe kids. A reckoning is coming.
