Wildfire opening reception is tonight from 7-9pm at! Join us for a curatorial tour beginning at 7:30pm.

Astra Papachristodoulou, Quiet Wildfires. Found fabric, wool and wooden felt, 2023.

Wildfire contemplates our shifting relationship with fire. The experiences surrounding wildfires are increasingly shared, regardless of the country or region in which we reside. The effects ripple far, and wildfires are becoming more prevalent and severe. This exhibition features diverse, critical work from artists based across many areas and nations, and includes both urban and rural experiences. There is an emergent sense of relationship, care and loss that suggests both the need for critical responses to the climate crisis and an increase in kin-centric thinking and living.

Wildfire is on exhibit mid-winter, the most insulated moment of the year to feel distance from wildfire. The smoke from the summer has probably worked its way through our systems, and perhaps our lungs are nearly clear (or as clear as they ever are). But in a couple of months, another early fire season may be announced. Or maybe, if we are lucky, there will be enough snow in the bush, and still more to replenish our dry lakes and reservoirs. If we get the chance, perhaps this is the year we all find ways to change the things we can, to care more, and to take the time to find paths that, at first, tend to seem impossible. Collectively, we are all learning to mourn, to ignore, and to meditate on a wound that won’t heal.

"Time I spent, Time I wasted," stated on two pillows handcrafted by Arianna Richardson. Arianna's work // Surface all the way through // will be exhibited from October 24th to December 13th 2025, in the Mainspace at the.

// Surface all the way through // is a collection of sculptures made from discarded materials that look like pillows. Abandoned craft supplies collected from the thrift store have been copiously layered to form decorative surfaces that conceal interiors of plastic packaging trash. While making this work with my sewing machine and vintage knitting machine, I was ruminating on waste, superficiality, sentimental materialism, distraction, accumulation, and containment.

✨️FREE TOTE BAGS! ✨️ Want one? Read more --->

In 2021 Qian Cheng created a project for The New Gallery’s Billboard 208 space in consultation with the Calgary Chinatown Business Improvement Area. The project was a response to the global COVID19 pandemic and its adverse effects on the sociopolitical and economic sectors experienced within the Chinese diasporic community in Calgary Chinatown.

Part of this project was to encourage folks to support local Chinatown businesses by leaving positive reviews on Google, Yelp or other review platforms in exchange for a free “What are your weekend plans?” tote bag! The New Gallery still has a bunch of tote bags and we want to encourage folks to continue to support local Chinatown businesses!

This support can be demonstrated in several ways: you can leave positive reviews on Google, Yelp, etc; share photos of your purchase or the business storefront with the hashtag #YYCChinatownWeekend; or DM photos to The New Gallery’s Instagram! Be sure to tag and in your stories and posts.

You can find a comprehensive list of Calgary Chinatown businesses and read more about Qian Cheng's project at the link in our bio!

Show any of the TNG staff proof of your positive review or promotion of a local Chinatown business to receive a free tote bag!:)
