It was so inspiring to paint Nina Simone for her, and while I did so I ended up listening to her songs as I worked on this piece. Every stroke and detail was to create a sense of strength, resilience, uncompromising beauty, defiance - a sense of a melody... one of those melodies that stay with you through the years.
