Let’s get to know a little bit more about him…
Tell us how you got into Personal Training…
“After my own 30kg weight loss journey, I was inspired to pursue a career in transformation coaching. This led me into coaching aspiring combat sports athletes, alongside anyone looking to reach their full potential. My coaching philosophy centres around the transformational power of training and nutrition.”
How do you like to train yourself?
“I enjoy a range of training a balance between strength & conditioning and bodybuilding. At the moment my focus is exploring movement through my rehab journey, while working on my body composition goals - this includes a five day split of a quad-focused Leg Day, a posterior-chain focused Leg Day, a Push Day, a Pull Day and a Full Body Day. Alongside this, I enjoy the occasional conditioning burst!”
What’s an interesting fact about yourself?
“I have completed the ‘75 hard’ challenge twice (and I’m not ruling out a third time!).”
Ryan is already busy getting to know TFR’s wonderful clients, across Shared PT, Partner PT and 1-1 PT, so look out for him on the schedule and book a session in with him when you can!

“Last year, following a period of overtraining and not fuelling my body adequately, I suffered from a leg injury and was forced to rest and offload lower body training for a few months. Not wanting to stop training altogether, I got creative with a programme of upper body workouts.
Here is an example of one of my Upper Body & Core days - ideal for anyone looking to train upper body. The first three exercises can be performed seated, if like me, you need to rest your legs; otherwise, they can be done standing if preferred:
A1: Seated Shoulder Press DB x8.
A2: Seated Hammer Curls x 10-12.
B1: Seated Bent Over DB Row NG x10.
B2: Push-ups (feet or knees) x6-12.
C1: Deadbug Dumbbell Pullovers, 8-12 e/s.
C2: Bicycle Crunches x8-12 e/s.
3 sets of each exercise with 30-60s rest between each.
Training safely while injured helps promote blood flow and healing, while keeping you fit and strong to fight and recover as quickly as possible. And mentally, it helps to stay in the game if you can!”
We’re pleased to report Sadie’s now back to training lower body, so we’ll bring you an updated training run-through from her soon!

Grip strength is one of the simplest yet most powerful indicators of overall musculoskeletal strength. It’s easy to measure and is increasingly recognised as a fundamental health metric.
As we age, grip strength naturally declines, but those who actively maintain it tend to stay stronger, more capable, and healthier for longer. Research has consistently linked higher grip strength with increased life expectancy and a lower risk of developing chronic diseases.
In short, a stronger grip often reflects a stronger and healthier body.
When training your grip, it’s important to target more than just the hands. Effective grip strength comes from a combination of finger strength, wrist stability, and forearm strength.
Ways to build better grip strength:
1️⃣ Arm Wrestler Curls
2️⃣ Hammer Curls with
3️⃣ Single-arm Lat Pulldown with
4️⃣ Single Arm Plate Stack Holds
5️⃣ Isometric Plate Holds
Small changes in your training can make a big difference, and your grip supports everything from lifting heavier to staying independent as you age; so take this as your cue to incorporate grip strength into your training today!

The Narrow-Neutral-Grip Landmine Row is one of the most effective (and joint-friendly) ways to build serious back thickness and / or strength. The angled bar path and neutral grip allow you to pull through a natural arc, hammering the lats, traps, rhomboids and rear delts, with the core and biceps working to support and stabilise.
Compared to traditional barbell rows, the landmine setup reduces stress on the lower back and shoulders; making it accessible to anyone who may struggle with discomfort in more conventional rowing variations.
The exercise can easily be loaded progressively by increasing the plates, meaning it can be effectively used for both hypertrophy and strength development.
Training tips:
- Maintain a stable, braced torso throughout and avoid excessive use of momentum.
- Drive the elbows back, squeezing the shoulder blades together and try to focus on the pull coming from the back, rather than the arms.
- Control the negative (lowering of the bar), to increase the time under tension and ensure muscle growth.
Because of its balance between safety and effectiveness, the Landmine Row works well as a primary pulling movement at the start of a back session, or as a staple mass-builder in any pull-focussed programme.
If you want a stronger, thicker back, you need this exercise in your programmes!

If you’re training hard but cutting corners on sleep, you’re holding back your progress. Fat loss, muscle recovery, energy, mood: all of it starts with how well you sleep.
Here are some simple, effective habits we recommend to support deeper, better sleep:
• Stop eating 1.5 - 2 hours before bed to support digestion
• Keep your phone out of bed - screens keep your nervous system “on”
• Use blue-light blocking glasses after sunset if you’re on screens
• Try “box breathing” to unwind and calm the body
• Try a magnesium supplement 1 - 2 hours before bed (we like Magnesium Glycinate)
• Support better breathing with a nose strip (and mouth tape if appropriate)
• Sleep in a dark, cool room to optimise recovery hormones
• Wind down with a short meditation or stillness practice
• Use earplugs if background noise disrupts your sleep
Small habits, done consistently, make a huge difference.
Train smarter. Recover better. Sleep like it matters... because it does!
