The paneled dining room at our Brooklyn Heights project was designed with one intention: dinner by candlelight. A pair of newly introduced elliptical arches frames the threshold between parlor and dining room, borrowing from the Neo-Grec bones of this historic rowhouse.
At our Brooklyn Heights rowhouse the kitchen was designed to feel like a room first, and a kitchen second. A wood-burning fireplace with terracotta firebrick and 17th-century Delft tiles frames the hearth. A new wood window system opens onto the garden below. Appliances disappear behind paneling, the hood tucks into a dropped soffit — nothing interrupts the calm of the space. English Country in spirit, but entirely this family’s own.
The parlor floor at our Brooklyn Height project was designed for a family that loves to gather in style.
Three distinct seating arrangements mix traditional and mid-century pieces, adapting the long, narrow room to any occasion, from casual evenings to neighborhood game nights. Stripping the original fireplace mantel mid-construction revealed a soapstone that anchors the room as if it were always meant to.
A breakfast nook at the threshold of inside and out. The new window system at our Brooklyn Heights project connects this space directly to the garden, the two feeling like one. A place to slow down and settle into the morning.

In our Brooklyn Heights primary suite, light moves through gently. Powder blue millwork lines the wall from floor to crown molding, part library, part dresser, entirely considered.

The kind of room that makes you want to stay in bed a little longer.

New project in Brooklyn Heights. The historic 1920’s garage facade remains, as five residences will take shape as loft-like volumes. New construction is set behind it—separated by a planted terrace zone, creating outdoor environments that mediate between the two scales.

Historically, dining rooms in parlor floor rowhouses were positioned at the rear of the home, with kitchens located on the floor below—separating heat, noise, and the workings of daily life from the formal spaces. Today, as the way we live continues to evolve, the parlor floor is often reconfigured to connect the formal dining room and the kitchen, allowing for a more fluid relationship between cooking, dining, and gathering.

In this Brooklyn Heights library, daylight arrives in small traces from the courtyard beyond. High-gloss emerald lacquer captures and amplifies that light, reflecting it across the walls so the room glows like a gemstone throughout the day.

Restoring the character of this Neo-Federal rowhouse in Brooklyn Heights began with the façade. The brownstone stoop and iron railings were refurbished, the front door and windows renewed, bringing the house back to life while preserving its architectural history.

Emanating Greek Revival charm on a leafy street in Brooklyn Heights, one 1840s row house quickly captured the hearts of a young family who would soon call it home. However, after several years in residence, the owners were ready for an update to better suit the modern lifestyle of their family of five. To achieve these goals while honoring the character of the property, they called Brendan Coburn. “When you’re surrounded by hallowed architectural history, you want to be a good steward of that environment,” the architect reflects. “I always feel that I have two clients in any project. One is the humans who are going to occupy it, and the other is the building itself.” With that in mind, he and designer Hilary Koyfman set to work reenvisioning the four-story abode.
