First come first served! Once it’s gone, it’s gone!
Birth Sanctuary was incredibly fortunate to receive a generous donation of labor, birth and postpartum supplies from Grove Hill Memorial Hospital
.
The reason Alabama rural hospitals are closing their labor and delivery units are because upwards of 80% of patients utilize Medicaid. Many times a hospital may only receive $1,000 for each birth. When the volume of patients drop, there is no way to keep 24/7 OBGYN, surgical, and anesthesia staff available without sinking the entire hospital.
.
While birth centers like Birth Sanctuary are fulfilling a critical need in areas facing severe perinatal care crises for those who are in need of a safe and supported labor and Birth environment - We can’t do this work alone!!
.
With continued and further expected slashes to public healthcare insurance systems, those in rural areas will continue to take the brunt of a hit that we already are being crippled from.
.
In these difficult times, whether it is a one time donation, or consistent reoccurring support, it is going to take all of the human capital that we can muster to ensure our families do not go without critical surveillance called prenatal care. It is desperately needed in West Alabama.
.
Our mission at Birth Sanctuary is not to turn away ANY family because of their inability to pay for services.
.
Each state independently decides whether or not to reimburse CPM services. Alabama Medicaid does not reimburse AT ALL for Certified Professional Midwives since CPM‘s lack federal recognition under the Social Security Act, and leave reimbursement to the states discretion. This is one main reason why Certified Nurse Midwives need full practice authority in Alabama, as CNM’s are explicitly listed as mandatory Medicaid providers under the Social Security Act.
.
We believe that obtaining prenatal care should not hinge upon having the financial means to obtain it. Everyone deserves a midwife!!

We are so grateful to have welcomed the investigative journalism team and Morgan Hightower, to Birth Sanctuary as we discussed the importance of midwifery in Alabama.
.
Midwives are perfectly poised to help fill the healthcare gap to improve accessibility to pregnancy care and improve perinatal and gestational outcomes - all while reducing maternal morbidity and mortality.
.
Certified Nurse Midwives are masters prepared, advanced practice registered nurses who provide full reproductive care from contraception, to complete pregnancy and postpartum services, to general gynecologic care, peri/post menopausal management including hormone replacement therapy and more!
.
There are so many reasons we need full practice authority for Certified Nurse Midwives - the same independent practice that currently exists in Alabama for Certified Professional Midwives. At Birth Sanctuary, along with our cross movement coalition, we are committed to working together with our state legislators to ensure that this happens post haste!
.
Birth Sanctuary is currently accepting clients with due dates from November 2025 to February 2026 and will not turn down any clients for their inability to pay or for lack of insurance coverage for prenatal care. This is only possible due to the generous support and contributions of donors who support our mission to fill in the gap and provide prenatal care in rural healthcare deserts.
.
To continue to support our mission and to help us provide prenatal care to those who need it/want it/deserve it, please donate from the link 🔗 in our bio. If you would like to support in other (free) ways, please share this video because Instagram will not recommend this video to new audiences since it is over two minutes long.

As we observe Black Maternal Health Week from April 11-17, 2025, we embrace the theme: “Healing Legacies: Strengthening Black Maternal Health Through Collective Action and Advocacy.” This week serves as a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to uplift and support Black birthing individuals and their families.

Throughout this week, communities nationwide are organizing events to foster awareness, activism, and community-building. These events, among many others, exemplify the collective action and advocacy needed to address systemic challenges and promote healing within our communities. By participating and supporting such initiatives, we honor the legacies of those who have fought for reproductive justice and continue to strive for a future where Black birthing individuals, families, and communities thrive.

Let’s come together this week and beyond to advocate for policies and practices that ensure equitable, high-quality, and culturally competent care for all. Through our collective efforts, we can create lasting change and honor the strength and resilience of Black mamas.
