Sunset skies glow orange and red because, when the sun is low, its light has to pass through much more of the planet’s atmosphere. On that long path, blue light gets scattered away from our line of sight, so the warmer reds and oranges are what reach your eyes. During the day, when the sun is high overhead, that scattered blue light comes at you from all directions across the sky — which is why the sky looks blue instead. Add a bit of dust or moisture in the air while the sun is low in the sky, and those sunset colors get even more dramatic.

My favorite winter hiking destination near Montreal is Mont-Mégantic National Park (technically a provincial park of Quebec).
There are four noteworthy trails in the park, but my go-to is the Mont Mégantic Loop Trail.
It’s not an easy hike, but it’s not overly difficult either. The loop comes in at just under 12 km round-trip, with about 500 m of elevation gain.
Winter can actually be a great time to tackle it, especially if there hasn’t been fresh snowfall. Microspikes make the climb more manageable, often providing better traction than you’d get on packed dirt & loose gravel during the summer.
THE OBSERVATORY
At the summit, you’re rewarded with the imposing Mont-Mégantic Observatory. Opened in 1978, it houses the largest telescope in eastern North America and the fourth largest in Canada. While it may not be the biggest overall, its state-of-the-art instruments make it the most powerful telescope in the country. You can drive up to the observatory in summer, but in winter the only way to reach it is on foot via the Mont Mégantic Trail—which makes standing at the top feel even more special.

Have you heard of the magical Ruelle Enchantée (“Enchanted Alley”), hidden off Rue Wellington in Montreal’s Southwest borough of Verdun?
Each year, the alley gets a fresh new décor: full of lights, greenery, cozy touches, and that signature “Pôle Well” holiday vibe.
This year’s setup features giant candy canes, a gingerbread man, and a classic gingerbread house.

❓Did you know the tradition of gingerbread houses has both storybook magic and real historical roots?
The idea of building edible houses really took off in Germany during the 16th century, where gingerbread was already a popular holiday treat. Bakers began crafting decorative, miniature houses out of spiced dough and icing, often displayed at Christmas markets.
But the tradition exploded in popularity thanks to the Brothers Grimm, whose 1812 tale Hansel and Gretel featured that famous witch’s cottage made of gingerbread and sweets. After the story spread across Europe, bakers began creating elaborate, candy-covered gingerbread houses inspired by the tale.
By the 19th century, gingerbread houses had become a beloved Christmas tradition for families, especially in German-speaking regions. When German immigrants came to North America, they brought the custom with them, and the rest is holiday-history deliciousness!

December always feels like a transition month. Some people are hanging onto the last traces of fall, others are fully embracing winter, and most of us are floating somewhere in between: shifting gears as the year winds down and the holidays start creeping in.
But up in the mountains, that transition hits way earlier. Peaks don’t bother easing into winter; they just flip the switch. These photos, I think, are a good reminder of that: every one was taken in August in the Canadian Rockies (mostly around Jasper and the Icefields Parkway), including a couple traken during an actual snowstorm, IN SUMMER no less.
It’s wild how quickly the seasons change at elevation, like the mountains are operating on their own timeline. And honestly? That’s part of what makes them so fascinating: you never really know what season you’re walking into until you get there. If you’re heading into the mountains this time of year, pack for winter—even if it’s sunny and warm in the valley. Elevation doesn’t mess around.

After last week’s wintry post, I’m jumping back in time to a few weeks ago, when I was visiting my old stomping grounds in Niagara Falls.
One spot I always try to make time for is the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve—a forested enclave tucked into the Niagara Gorge just upriver from the Falls. It’s easily one of the best places in the area for hiking, bouldering (the massive boulders here were carried by ancient glaciers long ago), and, perhaps most importantly, escaping the crowds that swarm around the Falls themselves.
Niagara Glen is also right near the Whirlpool Aero Car (cable car), which you can see in one of the photos. Although it looks like you’re gliding straight toward the U.S. side of the gorge, it’s just an illusion—the car follows a curve above the swirling Whirlpool Rapids. Technically, you do drift over U.S. territory for a moment, all without ever needing a passport!

❓Did you know that the Old Man of Storr was created as a result of a colossal landslide?
It was formed, along with the neighboring pinnacles, when thick basalt lavas from the Tertiary age flowed on to weaker, sedimentary rocks from the Jurassic era causing the latter to give way.
The Storr, which refers to the group of looming outcrops that include and surround the Old Man, is a title derived from the Norse word for “Great Man.”
Standing at 55 metres high, the ‘old man’ component of the name derives from the fact that when seen from the front, the rocky pinnacle and The Storr behind it create the face of a haggard and craggy old man.

📍Hraunfossar, Iceland
It’s #waterfallwednesday! Although not as powerful as some of Iceland’s other famous falls, Hraunfossar remains nonetheless one of the most esthetically pleasing in my view.

❓Did you know that Hraunfossar means 'Lava Falls' in Icelandic? These waterfalls are formed by rivulets streaming out of the Hallmundarhraun lava field -- that’s right, the waterfalls themselves are formed by groundwater flowing out from underneath the lava!
The lava field that Hraunfossar trickles through flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the nearby glacier of Langjökull, the second largest ice-cap in Iceland. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá river from ledges of less porous rock in the lava.

Hraunfossar’s strand of cascades is so long that it’s difficult to photragraph them in their entirety in one shot, as they span nearly 1 km in length.

𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒕 4 𝒐𝒇 4
During our trip to the Canadian Rockies last summer, I was able to visit Lake Moraine on four different occasions, experiencing a completely different “season” every time. Now these weren't your standard three-month seasons, but rather specific atmospheres created by the meteorological conditions: Smokey season, Foggy season, Cloudy Season, and Sunny Season.

(…ok, apologies, not exactly a sunny moment per se, but more one with a hint of blue sky, and, contrary to my other three posts, mostly unobstructed mountain peak views. Counts as sunny, right? 😅)

❓Did you know that Lake Moraine is located in a magnificent valley of the Alberta Rockies called the “Valley of the Ten Peaks.”
The obvious explanation for this name is that this valley is surrounded by 10 distinctive peaks, all well over 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level.
The astounding view isn’t the only reason why this location became one of the most photographed spots in all of Canada. The view of the lake with the mountains in the background is also known as the “Twenty Dollar View.” That’s because this exact spot was pictured on the Twenty Dollar Bill of Canada between 1969 and 1979.
