Kamakura is easily my favorite place to visit near Tokyo. The perfect mix of beach town and ancient capital with dozens of ancient temples strewn around give it a unique vibe unlike anywhere else in Japan. And this perfect vibe comes most alive in summer when the beaches get crowded, fireworks fill the night skies and time seems to stop ⏰
If you are visiting Tokyo in summer, make sure to add Kamakura to your itinerary 🙏
📍Shiroyama is located in Shimoda, a beautiful ocean town on the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula close to Tokyo. Known primarily as a beach destination and the place where Japan ended its 250 years of isolation, if you come here during the rainy season from Mid-June to Mid-July, you can witness another beautiful side of the city: Hydrangeas. Whether within the city or on top of the nearby Shiroyama Mountain, seeing these beautiful harbingers of summer color the area in hues of pink and blue, is one of the nicest day trips you can take from Tokyo. If you are visiting Japan in June/July, definitely make sure to add Shimoda to your itinerary!
🚆From Tokyo Station, you can take the Limited Express Odoriko Train that takes you to Shimoda in under 3 hours with no transfers.
Cost: Free.
📍The Seto Inland Sea lies between the main island of Honshu and smaller Shikoku Island and features tons of diverse scenery to explore. From big cities such as Hiroshima and Okayama to small islands (sometimes even uninhabited), beaches and more, hopping around this area is a great way to spend a summer in Japan completely off the beaten path! Here are the places featured in this video:
📍Onomichi
📍Tomonoura
📍Hiroshima
📍Miyajima
📍Takamatsu
📍Okayama
📍Teshima Art Island
📍Tenku no Torii
📍Sanagi Cat Island
…have more choices when it comes to getting basics such as Tshirts, heat tech and more 👇
🛍️Shimamura: This is like a knock-off Uniqlo offering many of the same basics (heat tech, airism-like materials), for up to 50% less than at Uniqlo. They are more commonly found in the countryside but can be found in bigger city centers such as Tokyo as well.
🛍️Workman is a store that specializes in blue-collar workwear but recently also started offering some fire everyday clothes at unbeatable prizes. They even have stores inside malls these days called Workman Girl (confusingly as they offer male and female clothing there). You can find some truly insane deals in those so keep your eyes open for them.
🛍️Last but not least we have GU. Many of you are probably familiar with this one, but if you are not: GU is the sister company of Uniqlo and pretty much offers the same basics and items you can find at Uniqlo just with a 20-30% discount.
From around mid-june to mid-july, Japan enters its rainy season with almost daily rains (for at least a couple hours). This can quickly turn any outdoor adventure into quite the wet experience. If you are visiting during that time here are a couple things to be prepared for:
☂️Make sure to carry an umbrella with you as rain can appear suddenly. You can also buy a small foldable one pretty much everywhere in Japan.
🏠Plan at least a couple indoor activities each day you can do as an alternative to your original plans. Nothing worse than just sitting indoors in a cafe waiting for the rain to pass and wasting your time in Japan.
📰Check out weather forecasts in advance. Sometimes it does not rain at all, some days just for a couple hours each day. Planning your activities around those time windows gives you more flexibility in your planning.
🥵While it might be raining, it is still very hot during summer leading to high humidity. Make sure you drink plenty to cool off and take cooling breaks often.
📍Myoraku-ji is located in Kawasaki City, right next to Tokyo and is also known as the Hydrangea Temple for the hundreds of vibrant Ajisai Flowers that grow on its grounds during the rainy season in mid-June to mid-July. WIth a beautiful atmosphere up on a hill, you can even enjoy beautiful city views over Tokyo all the way to Skytree on a clear day! Definitely make sure to add this to your June/July itinerary in Tokyo.
🚆From Shinjuku Station, take the Odakyu train to Noborito Station (15 minutes) and transfer to the Ajisaigo bus directly to the front of the Temple (Ajisaidera bus stop).

Located in the outskirts of Fukuoka city, in a random suburb is a piece, an enclave if you will, of Austria right in the middle of Japan. With a history of more than 100 years, this Austrian bakery/confectionary is well established back home in Upper Austria…and in the suburbs of Fukuoka.
Here, they started in 1994, with Adolf Sailer establishing the store in 4th generation (interestingly each generation is actually called Adolf Sailer). Since then, the store has established itself as a part of Fukuoka’s culinary scene offering mostly authentic Austrian baked goods and cakes. Seriously, where else can you get a Bosna and Leberkässemmel in the same place as a Kornspitz, Sachertorte and Heidelbeerstrudel?
But it’s not just the food that makes you feel right in Austria; with the very typical wooden interior, I felt right at home in a typical Austrian restaurant. And yes, even the toilets were the same brands as you can find in Austria.
To be honest it’s probably not worth going out of your way to visit when you are in Fukuoka but if you want to try some truly delicious bread, or are perhaps missing home like me, this place is really worth checking out and can be reached within less than an hour from Central Fukuoka!
Here are my 5 favorite spots to see Hydrangea in and around Tokyo 👇
📍Oji Hydrangea Road: Hundreds of Hydrangea growing right next to train tracks around Oji Station, north of Ueno.
📍Hakusan Shrine: Small, unassuming shrine in Bunkyo Ward of Tokyo. The grounds are covered in hundreds of beautiful Hydrangea creating a stunning atmosphere. Make sure to also check out Nezu Shrine if you are in the area.
📍Kaisei Hydrangea Village: Rice fields outside of Kaisei City in western Kanagawa. The beautiful contrast of water-filled paddies with colorful flowers make this the perfect day trip from Tokyo. A special bus service runs between Odakyu Kaisei Station and the rice fields during the annual festival period, but you can also visit outside of that time for fewer people.
📍Meigetsu-in: The most famous temple in Kamakura to see Hydrangea. If you want to visit and avoid crowds, come here on a weekday and as early as possible, ideally as otherwise it does get quite crowded.
📍Shiroyama: My favorite Hydrangea spot is located on the Southern Edge of Izu Peninsula around Shimoda. Shiroyama is a small mountain overlooking the city and blooms with hundreds of Hydrangeas in June/July. It does take around 3-4 hours to get here from Tokyo, but you can also stay overnight in a traditional Ryokan or rent a beach house for some summer vibes.
There are many more places across all of Japan to see these beautiful flowers so keep your eyes open for them if you are visiting in June and July!
