And what do I see in this artist sketchbook, but a dang Federico Joni binding that they saw at a Japanese Cultural Property exhibit??
I guess one European binding technically crept its way into this catalog....

Over 8000 photos taken.
One month crunch time.
Why do I do this to myself.
Anyways, mid February is catalog launch. Once I finish formatting the rough final ill have a better idea of the exact date.

At a glance, this Edo-Meiji Period manuscript may look like a lovely sketchbook, but there's more to it!!
Look closer at every outfit, and you'll see that every vestement, every fitting has been produced using actual kimono fabrics and brocade!!!
A composite manuscript enhanced with textiles? Wonders never cease....

Here's a rather beautifully made and rare, unfinished, Late Edo emakimono handscroll of the Tale of Great Minister Ban.
Not only do we get to see quite a few detailed paintings still in process, there's a complete composition depicting several yokai!

Today they're more widely known as the slips of colorful paper folks use to write prayers and and wishes on for the Star Festival, but back in they day, they were a favorite format for verse poetry, especially within the court and haiku circles
You could get some truly beautiful art too. Take this set for example, produced by Mano Gyotei, a disciple of Kyosai. Beautifully rendered detailing, and just fully illuminated too. It's amazing how much an artist could convey with so narrow a space.
This and so much more, new material, a month away.

What i never realized, was that it's actually part of a set!
And who but yours truly somehow stumbled upon a complete set??
Illusions and magic tricks, hand shadows, kirigami, magical fountains and more, i genuinely can't believe i came across this out of the blue.

Three months later, here we are.

Up for grabs is a Circa, manuscript Psalter-Lectionary for the Divine Office, produced in Germany, and for the Use of the Dominican Friars, written on parchment. This appears to be the Winter Section, or Pars Hiemalis.
The text is written in Latin, and is a Gothic script written in brown ink, bearing thousands of of 1-line initials in red and blue, as well as hundreds of larger 2-line initials in red or blue with filigree penwork decoration in red, green, or blue, the penwork often forming a full one-sided border. There are also many long I’s, ranging from 5–8-line examples, and lastly a selection of large, ornate 3 to 7-line initials with extensive filigree penwork decoration, as well as puzzle design in red and blue, featuring grotesque motifs, plants highlighted in green and yellow, sometimes with grotesques. These initials mark the major divisions of text, being folios. 4v, 15r, 25r, 34v, 46v, 57v, 70r, 117v, 138r, 144v, 262r, and 263v.
The manuscript is lacking the first numbered leaf, as well as several leaves at the end.
The manuscript has been bound in a contemporary binding, being wooden boards covered in pink-dyed pigskin, and the spine with three raised bands. There is a brass clasp present.
This manuscript is written in a 19-line format.
One manuscript on parchment in 12mo (14.2 x 10 cm), 314 leaves
This manuscript is in very good shape, with some rubbing and wear to the binding, discoloration of the leather on the spine and joints, as well as some wormholes to the boards, and some old staining to the binding and a bit of splitting to the hinges. There is minor soiling and staining throughout, heavier to the upper right side of leaf 281 onwards.
