The goal was to build the entire design around a circular composition. Easier said than done when you’re dealing with a dragon that constantly wants to escape the frame. 🙃
To keep everything moving in a circle, I wrapped the body tightly around itself and added flames to reinforce the flow. They help guide the eye around the piece and push the overall silhouette closer to a complete circle.
The dragon is holding a jewel featuring the TWT logo, which became a nice anchor point against all the movement happening throughout the design.
Sometimes the best way to improve is to see a piece from another artist and think, “Well… now I have to try too.”

Last piece from the Hannya Tomoe series, this time based on the mitsudomoe, the classic three-comma tomoe symbol. The three rotating forms create a really strong sense of motion and circular flow, which made it a perfect structure to build the composition around.
Like the previous designs in the series, the Hannya follows the curves of the tomoe itself, twisting into the rotation of the symbol. The exaggerated features and warped perspective help push that spinning movement even further while still keeping the overall silhouette readable for tattooing.
I used flames again throughout the composition because they naturally reinforce the motion of the mitsudomoe. They help guide the eye around the piece while visually supporting the symbolism of energy, movement, and circulation connected to the tomoe.
Really enjoyed exploring this series and seeing how a traditional Irezumi motif like the Hannya changes depending on the structure and flow surrounding it.

Another piece from my Hannya Tomoe series, this time built around the futatsu tomoe, the double comma-shaped tomoe symbol. Compared to the single tomoe, the two opposing forms create a stronger sense of balance and rotation, almost like two forces constantly moving around each other.
Just like the first piece, I used the tomoe shape as the foundation for the composition and let the Hannya follow the natural curves of the symbol. The exaggerated features and twisting forms help push the movement even further while keeping the overall silhouette readable.
Flames were added again to reinforce the circular motion and tie the whole composition together visually. They naturally support the symbolism of energy and flow that’s often associated with tomoe imagery in Japanese art and design.
Really enjoying exploring how traditional Irezumi motifs can interact with these classic Japanese symbols while still keeping the designs bold and tattooable.

This design takes inspiration from the hitotsu tomoe, the single tomoe symbol found throughout Japanese history and iconography. The tomoe is associated with movement, rotation, energy, and continuous flow, which made it a perfect foundation for this composition.
The Hannya itself follows the curve of the symbol almost like it’s spiraling inward, with the exaggerated jaw pushing the motion even further. I also chose a very unorthodox perspective from below, exposing the inside of the mouth to make the whole piece feel more unique.
To reinforce the movement of the tomoe shape, I wrapped the design with flames. Visually they help guide the eye through the composition, but they also fit naturally with the symbolism of motion and energy tied to the tomoe itself. 🔥🌚
Really enjoyed experimenting with a more unusual composition while still keeping it rooted in Japanese traditional tattoo aesthetics.

Reworked one of my older Hannya designs from about a year ago. Same idea, just pushed further.
This time I really leaned into one of its key features, the exaggerated jaw. Took it to an extreme and had it curve back into the face, injuring the eye. It changes the whole expression and makes it feel more intense.
Compared to the old version, this revised version feels more uncanny and unsettling now, refined linework, better flow, and more dynamic movement. Everything connects more naturally and adds more character to the tattoo.
Still rooted in Japanese traditional, just a more refined approach this time.
Good reminder that progress comes from repetition. Going back to old designs and reworking them shows you exactly where you improved.
If you’re into tattooing, Irezumi, or drawing, just keep at it. Consistency over time really shows.

Revisited one of my older designs to see how much changed in a year. Same idea, different execution. 🤷🏻♂️
The concept stayed the same, a cobra with its hood fully opened, revealing a skeleton coming through like a portal. But this time I focused more on structure, cleaner linework, and making the whole piece flow better as a tattoo. The flames help lock everything together and give the design movement so it reads strong on skin.
It’s a mix of new school and neotraditional, but still heavily influenced by Irezumi in terms of linework and composition.
This is just a reminder that progress comes from repetition. Redrawing old designs, fixing mistakes, and pushing the same idea further is where real improvement happens. If you’re into tattooing or drawing, keep going. You’ll see the difference sooner than you think. 😘
