“It is with deep gratitude that I stand here to represent my beloved country, Ethiopia, at the 61st Venice Biennale.
This is a remarkable event that has shaped so many artists I respect, from El Anatsui to Julie Mehretu.
Just a few years ago, at the 2022 Dakar Biennale,
receiving the Grand Prix Léopold Sédar Senghor
felt like a considerable turning point — and yet, I couldn’t have dreamed of standing here today,
honoring the spirit of Ethiopia.
Shapes of Silence as an exhibition grew out of a quiet place — thinking about silence as something spiritual, cultural, and social, and how it lives through memory, resilience, and identity at the very heart of Ethiopia.
My deepest thanks go to the curator, Professor Abebaw Ayalew, whose scholarship on Ethiopian heritage and generous mentorship profoundly cultivated my artistic development.
Almost 20 years ago, in 2007, he was the first to believe in my abilities and potential. And today, in 2026, his support continues to accompany my work.
From his mentorship that led to my scholarship in Germany, to today, his enduring presence has made this journey transformative.
Continuing in that spirit, I am also very grateful to assistant curator Yohannes Mulat Mekonnen, whose thoughtful collaboration has shaped this journey.
I am proud to represent my country and to share my work with an international audience.
I hope this exhibition will inspire curiosity, dialogue, and appreciation for Ethiopian contemporary art, while encouraging future generations of Ethiopian artists to share their voices and their unique art with the world.”

Yesterday marked the opening ceremony of Shapes of Silence, presented at the Ethiopia Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, with the presence and opening remarks of H.E. Ambassador Demitu Hambisa Bonsa, artist Tegene Kunbi, and co-curator Yohannes Mulat Mekonnen.
Major congratulations to Tegene Kunbi, the curatorial team — Abebaw Ayalew and Yohannes Mulat Mekonnen — and to everyone involved in making this important project possible.
