A little over a year ago I was being implanted with a blastocyst that would become my son. I had no idea about birth rights, doulas or the politics of home birth other than a firm belief that all women have the right to choose from pregnancy onwards.
When I became pregnant, I began self studyāfinding alternative pathways alongside the medical system and becoming radicalized in the subject of birth rights. I was shocked about how little I knew about the history and evolution of pregnancy and birth; an often over medicalized modern system, rife with scaremongering and outdated and over complicated means of monitoring and delivery, where mothers can have their autonomy and choice taken from them at critical and vulnerable moments. In the end, some are left with the emotional and physical scars of birthing trauma, PPD and PTSD.
How did something so natural, ingenious, down right magicalāthat is built into the very fabric of the female body, become so feared, so altered, so disbelieved?
When I met my doula and began discussing home birth, free birth and women supporting women in the birth space, I realized this was the way for me. Not only for my first birth but for me as a means of service moving forwards. To have someone I trusted by my side, supporting me in pre and post natal education, rocking me, holding me, believing in me, seeing me through and championing me into the final throws of birth, was one of the most challenging and life-altering experiences. So with the help of, I am honored to, hopefully, become a birth advocate, doula, emotional support system and gentle guide for other birthing humans.
I cannot wait to share more about my journey.
