Following a series of lessons exploring Stone Age art, including an immersive lesson where we tipped tables on their sides, turned the lights off, attached paper to the tables and got to work on our own cave art, we explored the use of natural dyes!
Although lots of these materials of course weren’t available to use in the Stone Age, the children adored creating their own natural dyes and annotated how to strengthen/lighten the colour. We used coffee, beetroot, turmeric and berries!

Today we had the best first day back to school! We set the scene of the children waking up and it was suddenly 5000 years ago, we did some acting and using our imagination and then got to work. We found an area to live, and decided to settle. The children LOVED planning and making their own settlements out of plasticine and I was so impressed with their ideas, they had to be so thorough, if they wanted a boat, how was it made? They needed tools, what were the tools made from if there was no metal? We had children making cows roasting on a fire, bridges, fields full of crops, tools and so much more! Over the next two days we will be introducing new scenarios and the children will have to adapt their settlements, for example conflict, shops, past times and more! What a great way to start the year!

Certainly not as exciting as my previous continuous provision classrooms but I’ve tried to make it as warm and welcoming as I can for my lovely year 4’s.
I like to add displays with the children to ensure they’re purposeful. For our transition sessions the children created book covers and blurbs with themselves as the main character, I told them this was for our reading corner and they requested that I hung them like floating books from Harry Potter, so let’s hope they’re not too disappointed with my handy work tomorrow 😂
I didn’t do a birthday display last year but it’s so important for the children to feel thought of and reflected in their environment.

What a day with my honestly beautiful new class, we played games, read stories and got to know each other whilst having tonnes of fun in provision!
Our new small world and block additions were honestly a HUGE hit, we had hogwarts, an enchanted forest, a recycling centre, “new and improved London” and so much more. As a teacher there is nothing better than getting into provision with your class and exploring their little minds as they play - don’t leave provision support to your TA - it’s invaluable time that you get to connect with your children and let them know how much you respect their play 🤍

Lots of changes this year!
As a whole school we are all having coherent hessian display boards, I like to add to my boards with the children so whatever goes on them is purposeful hence why they look pretty boring at the moment.
This year I have 4 working tables instead of 2, some will be used for provision activities but it’s great to have extra for additional adults, independent ground and same day interventions 🌟
Big blocks and lots of my old construction items have gone and have been replaced with smaller intricate blocks ensuring that models can be more detailed, thoughtful and intricate. My construction area now consists of Meccano, K’nex with motors, Magnext and a few other bits.
Last year I found my children were loving the creative area but producing things that contained no skill, thought or even effort. This year items will only be going out in provision once the skill has been explicitly taught… and we have art studio sketchbooks 👏🏽
It’s not finished, it’s not perfect and always changes depending on the needs of the children when they get in there, and thats how it should be.
Now to label and then relax until September 🌟
I’m loving moving away from traditional topics and focusing on skills based learning within subjects 👏🏽 We started off by looking at features of human and physical geography, then we looked at a blank map of our school grounds and explored them to understand what we could plot on our own maps. Children then worked independently to create their own map and key of our school!
Making learning relevant to the childrens knowledge really helped my class to be so independent and confident with this. If they weren’t sure of what else to put on, my response was simply “go outside and take a look” - we were so proud of the maps produced!

The children LOVED taking ownership of their learning this week and creating their own double page spreads for the first time about aeroplanes. I gave them a brief input on expectations and the rest is all them 👏🏽 next week we will be designing our own super vehicles and doing the same thing with more and higher expectations. My class were obsessed over getting a “proud buzzy feeling in our tummies” and that’s certainly what we all got 🌟
It’s been a while… literally almost a year to be exact but I am soooo happy to be back! After feeling like I just needed some time to be Megan and not Miss Chermside outside of work, I’m so ready to come back and show you not only the fun and exciting things we’ve been getting up to but I just want to keep it so real with you guys rather than trying to force content for the sake of it.
We still massively believe that continuous provision is the best way to help our children learn and be be happy, we’ve done some tweaking and finally feel more confident with our practise across key stage 1!
