今日は刺龍堂の代表作、Kunoをご紹介します。
昨日ご紹介した作品は少しモダンなスタイルのKunoでしたが、本日は僕がこの仕事を始めた頃から彫り続けている、最も王道とも言えるKunoです。
今回のお客様は、高校生の頃に雑誌『Tattoo Girls』で刺龍堂を知り、「いつかはKunoを入れたい」と思い続け、その長年の夢を叶えるために来てくださいました。本当にありがとうございます。
タトゥーには、それを入れようとする人の数だけ物語があります。
誰かと同じ理由である必要はありません。
自分にとって大切な意味があるのであれば、それだけで十分だと思います。
まだ「ラインワーク」という言葉すら無かった時代、できるかどうかも分からないながらも、僕のそれを「極めたい」という想いと、お客様の協力があって始めることが出来たのがこのKunoです。
20年以上、このスタイルを続けてこられたのは支えてくださる皆様のおかげです。
Kunoとはインドネシア語で「古いもの」という意味ですが、今でも僕にとって特別なスタイルであり続けています。

Today I’d like to introduce one of Shiryudoh’s signature styles: Kuno.
Yesterday I shared a more modern interpretation of Kuno, but today’s piece represents the original style that I have been tattooing since the beginning of my career.
This client first discovered Shiryudoh in a tattoo magazine while still in high school and had dreamed of getting a Kuno tattoo ever since. I’m truly grateful that I could finally help make that dream come true.
Every tattoo has its own story. There is no need for your reason to be the same as anyone else’s. If it is meaningful to you, that is all that matters.
Back when the term “linework” didn’t even exist, I wasn’t even sure if this style was possible. Kuno was born because of my determination to master it, together with the trust and support of my clients who believed in what I was trying to create.
I’ve been able to continue this style for more than twenty years only because of everyone’s support.
“Kuno” means “old” in Indonesian, but it remains one of the most special styles to me even today.

Today I’d like to introduce a new Kuno design.
Unlike the traditional Kuno style that has become my signature, this piece was created with a more modern approach.
It combines symmetry with carefully placed asymmetrical elements, creating balance while adding movement and individuality. The colors are bright and vibrant, giving the design a lively character.
As a small hidden detail, there are actually three initials incorporated into the design.

A client from Switzerland came to Shiryudoh for a cover-up tattoo.
He had the Japanese characters “板前” (itamae / sushi chef) tattooed prominently on his forearm. While the tattoo held personal meaning, living in Japan meant people immediately understood what it said, and he found himself constantly being asked about it. Over time, he became uncomfortable showing his arm in public.
He told me he had consulted several tattoo studios before, but every one of them turned down the project.
When he visited Shiryudoh, I presented several different design ideas. After discussing the possibilities together, we decided on this final composition.
The original lettering was concealed using bold brush strokes, combined with a koi drawn with a slightly calligraphic feel. I also used thicker linework to ensure the new design could confidently overpower the existing tattoo.
He left smiling, saying, “Now I can finally show my arm again, and I can even go to sushi restaurants without worrying about it.

前腕には「板前」という漢字が大きく入っていました。
ご本人にとっては意味のあるタトゥーでしたが、日本ではそのまま意味が伝わってしまうため、腕を出すたびに周りから聞かれることが多くなり、次第に人前で腕を出すことに悩まれるようになったそうです。
これまでにも複数のタトゥースタジオへカバーアップを相談したものの、すべて断られてしまったとのことでした。
そこで刺龍堂へご相談いただき、見学の際にいくつかデザインをご提案しました。その中から今回のデザインを選んでいただきました。
板前の文字は大胆なブラッシュで隠し、その流れに合わせて少し筆書きの雰囲気を取り入れた鯉を組み合わせています。元の文字に負けないよう、ラインもやや太めにして全体のバランスを整えました。
「これで腕を出して歩けるし、寿司屋にも半袖行ける」と笑顔で帰られた姿がとても印象的でした。
遠くスイスから刺龍堂を選んでいただき、本当にありがとうございました。

With the typhoon in the forecast, I was a little worried from the day before that today’s appointment might not happen. Thankfully, my client made it safely to the studio.
Since they were scheduled to fly home soon, I was genuinely relieved.
Today’s client came all the way from Toronto, Canada.
His existing tattoos tell a journey of their own—his chest and shoulder were tattooed in Bali, his back in Thailand, and this time at Shiryudoh in Japan.
I started my own tattoo journey in Bali, then continued in Thailand, and eventually established myself in Japan.
Seeing his tattoo journey mirror my own path felt like more than a coincidence. It truly felt like fate had connected our paths.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for visiting Shiryudoh.

Private tattoo studio Shiryudoh is located in Shibamata, Katsushika, Tokyo.
To everyone who has supported us since our days in Jiyugaoka and Kakinokizaka,
and to those discovering us for the first time, welcome.
This year marks our sixth year since relocating to Shibamata.
We focus on our own original linework style,
valuing simple and delicate designs that differ from conventional tattoo styles or traditional motifs.
In an age moving rapidly toward AI and digital processes,
we continue to value the subtle irregularity, warmth,
and human touch that only hand-drawn work can offer.
Shiryudoh is run by two artists, Ron and Misa.
Ron began his journey after working in archaeology and traveling extensively around the world,
where he encountered tattooing as a form of expression.
At a time when the term “linework” did not yet exist,
he developed the Kuno style, which remains central to his work today,
combining intricate detail with Japanese sensibility.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has visited us,
and to those who travel from afar to be here.
